  • 58 Packard Hawk Convertible

Saw this Packard Hawk Convertible this weekend. I never knew there was a Packard Hawk convertible prototype. It is in Dayton Ohio at the Packard Museum and is not currently running:

The museum is a must see!!!!!!!

Here are some good links in reference to museum. I have never seen a bigger private collection.

America's Packard Museum is the largest public collection of Packard Motor Car Company automobiles and memorabilia in the United States of America. Located in Dayton, Ohio.

Is the Packard Hawk convertible really a factory prototype?

I do not believe this car to be a factory prototype. Think of the state of Studebaker-Packard finances at that time. S-P built the '53-'54 prototype convertible and cancelled the plan when they had more money and certainly higher K body production than with Packard Hawks. This car may be something built up by or for a S-P executive's personal use, but that wouldn't make it a prototype.

Would that just be a factory custom built car, Gary? Looks great. Is there any documentation on it to prove that it wasn't just one of those outside custom shop convertibles?

I checked on this car many months ago. It is not a Packard Hawk convertible prototype. The serial number of the car is 58LS 1376 and the body number 58L K9 383. I checked the production order and it was built the 3rd week of December 1957 well into the production run, that started on Oct 3, 1957, and there are no notations or other indicators of the car being anything other that a standard production vehicle. Without documentation to the contrary it seems apparent that it was modified by a previous owner.

I wonder if they can even name the "chief engineer" in question?

Probably built by the same guy that built that beautiful '64 GT Hawk shortened wheelbase Roadster with the R1 or R2 Engine, it was even the same color. It was on ebay a while ago for BIG bucks.

It is not a "prototype" was built in WA. The builder also built the 64 Hawk Convertible. I don't know where this museum got their info but the car was sold by a person in TX. It was originally a normal Packard Hawk.

The museum curator was a nice enough guy but he was the one that told me that and looking at the car I had my doubts.

Can that "commons.wikimedia.org" web site information be corrected to not list this vehicle as a prototype?
