  • Small backfire at the carb at startup

My 50 Champion was running a little rough last week so I thought I'd do a minor tune. You know, clean and regap the plugs, check the timing, clean and reset the points and adjust the carb.
I found the culprit right away. Both spring clips that hold the distributor cap in place were loose with the cap just sitting on top of the distributer. Fixed that and moved on to the rest of the chores. I reset the idle jet because I had soot on the plugs and leaned it out as much as I thought I could. I then reset the idle screw at about 600 rpm. Yes, I know, 500-550 is recommended but it runs a lot smother at 600 r.p.m.
The car runs great now except I get a small backfire at the carb when I start it up.
Do I still have the carb set to rich?

I would re-check your timing specs. Rich or lean...it shouldn't be back firing.
