The turquoise Avanti with round headlights shown on the SDC web pages looks an awful lot like a '63 to me. But, it's labeled as a '64. I notified the webmaster, but nothing changed. [?]

Is that really a '64 Avanti pic on SDC website?

Lets not forget that the round headlight clip could be ordered if so desired after the change over to the square headlight clip. Thus it is possible to have a '64 with round headlights. Also isn't there a service letter that instrucks dealers to sell any '63's in stock as '64's after a certain date. Comments please.

I believe the change over from '63 to '64 started at ser. no. 4837 and continued to 4892 - this is where the 'running' changes occurred. Richard is correct with his 'clip' assumptions, and, the sales instructions. The only way to really know what the pictured car is is to have the serial number. Even that 'may not' tell the entire story without knowing the maintenance history of the car. Ex: was it a square '64 in an accident and the then owner liked the rounds better and had the '63 clip installed???
Avanti authenticity is a complicated matter.

Which car and picture are you describing?
If the owner reported it as a '64 it probably is, the headlight buckets have little to do with it, there are many other more major '64 running changes like Interior trim, Interior colors, Walnut Console and Wheel, the BIG one is Left Air Inlet Grille on top of "scoop" on cowl (this requires a new "Body", is not a bolt-on), Group 24 battery instead of 3EE long Battery etc.

I currently have R4974 in my possession. I did not believe it to be a 64 but build sheet told me otherwise. It has round headlights, Walnut Dash and Walnut Wheel.

I probably obtained the photo back in late 2003 when beginning to develop the site. At the time, I did not think it important to keep track of the sources of the pics. Something in the back of my head tells me that I may have originally labeled it as 63, because of the round headlamps, but was subsequently corrected. I dunno.
If nothing else, think of it as a "nugget" on the SDC site designed to spark spirited discussion years later! There may be more!
