  • B-17 Liberty Belle (off topic but exciting)

I have the opportunity to fly on the above mentioned plane Saturday morning at 11:00 in Chesapeake/Suffolk, VA. My seating assignment for takeoff & landing will be in the cockpit(Really Great) During the flight, we will be able to move about to the different stations on the airplane.

I will try & take some photos and also look at the radial engines to see if there is a Studebaker logo on any of them

    Take Care

You should be exited. I am so looking forward to when I can do the same. I have two B-17 sites bookmarked and keep track of the schedules so I can plan a flight when they come close to Springfield, MO.
Looking forward to seeing the pictures.

The Liberty Belle was here in the spring..IIRC at that time it had one (or two) Studebaker-built Wrights...
      Enjoy your flight.

BTW: My dad was a B-17 pilot in the war...it's a great plane.

Are you rated multi engine recip?
That is a primo, high dollar seat...
Last I heard, guest rides on the flight deck were only 'in flight'...
        Way cool!

The Studebaker logo will be on the front case, below the propellor hub. I have looked at many B-17s at airshows and museums over the years and they all had at least one Studebaker-built Wright R-1820 engine, sometimes as many as three - but I have yet to have seen all four. Russ Farris

I took a flight on "Nine-O-Nine" about ten years ago and it was a fantastic ride. I got about fifteen minutes behind the co-pilot's stick and was allowed to fly it for that time. It was really a highlight of my life to be able to do that. It did have at least a couple of Studebaker built Wright Cyclones on it.

Here's a few pics I took that day...

The closest I saw one is it flew over my house a few years ago on the way to a show near NYC . I was working on my Avanti and was amazed at the sight of it. Take plenty of photos. Enjoy the ride..

                        Have a great ride. FANTASTIC!
I'm not a betting man, but I'd bed that one or more of those engines was built by Studebaker. If they have a step ladder near the plane, ask if you can climb up to see the engines up close. You'll see the mfg tag right there.

I flew on the B-17 "Fuddy Duddy" a few years ago. The left inboard engine was Studebaker built.

I took pics of the three Studebaker engines on the Nine Oh Nine a couple of years ago, but can't find them. Guess they were on my hard drive when it hiccupped. Darn.

I would love to post the pictures of me and one grandson visiting the "Sentimental Journey" in Joplin, MO last year but I haven't mastered the technique to post pictures. I'm sure most of you read my article in TW last year.
