55 president , what fluid would it take?

If you drain and refill the entire transmission, use Dexron III _ Mercon

Which would include draining the torque converter.

The above is assuming an automatic transmission (DG 250). I guess the clue is "fluid" as opposed to oil or grease, but I don't like to make those assumptions.

When I first had my DG200 serviced in 1978, I doubt the mechanic knew you could drain the TC. I didn't know. I've used Dexron/Mercon exclusively and it still works great.

Is there a access panel, to take off for the torque converteraccess? They can't do a modern day tranny flush can they? Have you ever seen them hook up a m0odern day tranny flush?

Should be an access hole in the bottom of the bell housing. Rotate the converter until you see the drain plug in the converter.
Get a gasket for the transmission pan. The filter/screen is brass and can be cleaned and re-used.

By "modern day tranny flush" do you mean siphoning the old fluid through the filler tube and putting in new fluid? Don't go there.
If you mean hooking a machine to the trans cooler lines and running until new fluid completes circulating? My trans is air-cooled. What's yours?

There will be a plate on the side of the transmission (left, I think). It should say Detroit Gear 200 or Detroit Gear 250.

If you are referring to an automatic transmission in a 1955 President, it should be a DG 250. It is air cooled so there are no fluid lines going to the radiator to use for a flush. Drain the pan and the torque converter. Use the "search" function on the Forum to find proper refill instructions.
