I'm thinking universal joints, worn spring bushings, or shock bushings.

Bams might be on to something here. The way you describe the noise and when it occurs...seems to be that moment of shifting gears as the weight of the car changes from acceleration thrust from back to front which could cause any worn or loose suspension and drive components to shift. You should get the car on a lift and check all the suspension and drive line components. Don't overlook the A-frame bolts.

Check the rear axle nuts for correct torque. Your shop manual has the specs. for your specific model axle, (ie) "23", "27", or "44". Hope this helps.

What about checking the fluid in the Transmission. Also the rear end well it wouldn't hurt to check all of the fluids. A good lube job and you should be able to see the problem.

SOmething I guess I sould have mentioned, the metallic sound seems to be coming from the middle of the car. I was thinking a bad U-Joint or the diff. fluid might be low. But I'll check into the other ideas too. Thanks everyone...

That car looks familiar. Would it have been at Petco in Bremerton last month?

I had exactly the same clunk in my GT Hawk on a road trip to Key West 20 years ago - the nuts holding the universal joint to the drive shaft, I forget which end, had loosened. Go down the road at 15 mph or so, then shift into neutral - not under load, if it's loose, you'll hear the drive shaft flopping around. Russ Farris

I might not drive it until an under-car (as opposed to a keyboard-and-monitor) inspection was performed

My guess is one or two worn universal joints. You have been greasing them, haven't you? Even with grease, they wear out. Not a big deal to replace them.

I bought the U-joints today to install tomorrow. I figure just to change both of them even if it's just one that is bad. The drive shaft has a slight wiggle to it if I grip it and try to turn it back and forth. I did not check to see if bolts were lose though, sinc I can't fit under it without a jack. Thanks for the help everyone...

LOTS easier changine U-joints at home versus on the side of the road.
