View Full Version : Kart Hauler at Pleasanton Good Guys

Dick Steinkamp

The Kart Hauler (aka The Ute) will be at the GoodGuys West Coast Nationals in Pleasanton Californis (SF Bay Area), August 21-23. It will probably be the only green custom '53 Stude there with a for sale sign in the window ;).

Those that wanted to see it in person but missed it at the GNRS or the Can-Am Zone meet can check it out there (along with 4,000 beautiful hot rods [:p]).

PM me for my cell phone number if you want to hook up at the show.

Why didn't you take the car to Puyallup? There weren't a lot of really quality cars there.

If I remember correctly, it was at Pleasanton that you found it right? Full Circle? Now you have given me a reason to go. I have yet to do a Good Guys, maybe it is time. Just might see you there.

Actually, that picture was taken at Bobby Walden's Speed Shop in Pomona

It was right after the GNRS in January and where Hot Rod Deluxe shot their pictures for the feature.

I've heard that before from others, but I don't get it.

GoodGuys would be my dream job, but Gary Meadors beat me to it.

He essentially owns the hot rod show business. NSRA does OK, but nothing like the scale of GoodGuys.

He has folks that willing pay to exhibit their cars and others that are willing to pay to see them...not to mention the vendors that pay to sell their stuff, GoodGuys logo products, etc. etc.

Everybody there is having fun and enjoying themselves with their favorite toy and friends...it would be sort of like running a golf course.

He gets to go all over the country to see hot rods.

I'm trying hard to think of a downside :D

The show of cars are great, the swap meet is also good, but why does he need to charge for people to get in and buy? and then pay more to enter the car show area and that after paying to park your car, all he wants is money, money, money, he is the only place that charges buyers to buy after charging seller to sell, I was at Arco yesterday and sure they charged $6.00 each but you could say that was parking or that was to get in to buy, but either way the total was only $12.00 for the 2 of use and a sure a lot better swap meet and the setting, Bob

Whatever you say about Goodguys events, you can't argue with success. Charge people to bring their cars, charge people to see the cars, charge people to sell stuff. They consistently turn out more cars and people than almost anyone else, and they don't pretend to do it for some altruistic reason. It's really a testament to the power of unashamed capitalism and the profit motive to make sure more people get what they came to get.

I think we'd ALL like EVERYTHING to be cheaper (or free)...no argument.

I don't go to pro sports events because they cost too much. Some don't go to GoodGuys events because the cost too much. Life is all choices and compromises. [^]

Parking together is tough, but we should give it a try. Evenings are a little more flexible as some don't hang to party and slots open up before sundown.

I will give you a call when I get to town on Saturday morning so we can hook up. I booked a room at the Best Western Pleasanton Inn on Owens Ct. It's not one of the designated motels, but it is right among them and the rate is good. Are you planning on putting the Kart Hauler in the designated For Sale area?

Saturday is the BIG day at Pleasanton. Probably 4,000 hot rods there in an area that comfortably holds 3,000. If the rules are the same, you'll need to pick up your registration materials at the host hotel before you go to the fairgrounds...this is even if you pre register.

Count on long lines of cars to get into the fairgrounds and then a big hunt for someplace to park the car.

You may want to consider coming down Friday in time to pick up your registration materials to get an earlier start Saturday AM.

I'll not be parking in the for sale area. Friday for sure in the general area and Saturday maybe in John Sweeny's area in the swap meet.

Latest update...Dick and I DID get to park together on Friday. Very cool except the Ute and Kart combo attracts waaay too much attention:D. Pics to follow.

Oh, and the Ute/Kart Hauler is headed for Texas under new ownership. I'll let Dick post details when he gets home, but he did say it was OK for me to report the news.

Yea I saw Dick on Thursday on the 680 freeway in Walnut Creek towing the Ute ...heading to Pleasanton...[8D]

he wouldn't even look over at me as I passed him ...with my Cowl Induction wide open" howling" ...and the flowmasters growling ..

Gosh ..., was it because I was driving an El Camino? [8]

naw --- he was just getting over losing the wheel bearings on his trailer ..[8)] while towing down the ute

I hope Dick heard the PA annoucnements about a guy needing a tow back to Oregon
(some guy at the show blew his tranny )

and since Dicks pockets are now full and his trailer empty ... this would be a match to pay it foreward ???

Dick ... Good Seeing you at Pleasanton! ....

Bob..
I hear you loud and clear ... but I also walk the other side myself ...and Gary is a friend -

-he has been called the Greedy Guys (and I also have been attacked as well ) and he would never say so .. but it does hurt.
... he lets it roll off his back and keeps a smile ... he has a huge $$$$payroll .. spends a huge amount on advertising, security, porta potties, Fair ground rentals , the list is huge ..

he is greeted in every city with new and challenging fees.. but like the energizer bunny (he takes a licking and keeps on ticking -- oops I think that was a Timex saying)

He has also had some unfair lawsuits tossed at him -- and the rumor mill is always rampant with total BS --one was that MOPAR was buying him out .. ..

He has passed the Goodguy Torch to his son Marc .... and Marc knows he has some pretty big shoes to fill..and I am sure that he will do his dad proud ..

The Goodguys courts the youth of the hobby knowing full well that us "Old" Goodguys are on our way out ..and we need the "Young" Goodguys to jump into this hobby.

Goodguys also contributes $$$ to many things -- like ACCC that is fighting hard to save our old cars.

Gary is not one to tout these things .... I hope this puts a little light on the "Goodguys" and why it costs a little to run these events.

Goodguys is a for profit operation and deserves payback for all that they put it all on the line at each the shows across the nation ..-

We recently had to defend ourselfs from a lawsuit where a guy fell and broke his back at an event that was held 2 weeks after our Reno swap meet .. all because the his lawyer thought that we may have left a" metal clete" in the asphalt... after our insurance company spent $12,000+ in legal fees etc - his lawyer decided they would drop us from the suit if we agreed not to sue them back
.. guess what?? my insurance company signed off and then raised my rates EVEN THOUGH WE HAD NOTHING to with his injury.. Amazing huh ? and how much is the gate to get into the Goodguys you ask?

and MUCH thanks for coming to our swap meet held at that Arco grounds! it was wild and crazy, blew my mind, thats for sure.. miles & miles of rusty parts .. even a Stude or two ...

I was glad to see Pat & Dick at the Goodguys show and I think they got their moneys worth ...
I know I did... just looking at all the cars ..and hearing the laughter and seeing smiles from all the participants.... no stimulus funds needed there!!:D

we need to savor these events... I know of several annual auto events that are not happening next year .. one being the San Francisco Rod & Custom Show at the Cow Palace... [:0]
