I have a 62 289. I don't remeber what things were like when I disassembled the engine three months ago. I pressed the hub on and I have .720" from the end of the crank to the front of the pulley? Being a 62 this is a shorter snout shaft, but I don't want to torque the bolt and tweak the pulley. Will it be okay or should I make a little spacer? Thanks in advance.

Please, buy a shop manual! Everything that came off the nose needs to go back on the nose in order. You need especially to address the crankshaft end play, exactly like the book. It is set with shims to .003 to .007. Be sure you have the thrust washer in properly. If you mount the pulley and harmonic balancer correctly, you will not have almost 3/4 inch of snout sticking out.

First I need to clarify. I have a whole truckload of shop and parts manuals from the 30s to 64. Of course having a manual doesn't mean you know what you are doing. I didn't completely disassemble the engine. I didn't even take the crank gear off. I pulled the cover and did some things on the top end. I have everything that I took off of the nose back on correctly. The book shows the same. What I don't remember is if there was a gap when I disassembled it. Does this help? Thanks.

Jake I am trying to picture what your asking about.
Is the crank snout protruding past the pulley .720 or is it in
.720??

Its in .720". I'm thinking that its okay because in 63 when they made the snout longer it would come to the end of the hub. I think I'll just put it on. It can't hurt anything because the bolt is gonna pull up to the pulley, which is against the spacer which in turn is against the end of the hub.
