Just pulling out, but wanted to share this quote; it's from the preface of a book called Americana- Roadside Memories, by Tim Steil... it speaks for me as well[8D]:

I suppose there are people in this world who are unaffected by the smell of diesel smoke. That, leaning against a truck stop gas pump at 3 AM, a warm summer breeze full of corn pollen, and exhaust fumes bathing them would not give them an urge to purchase a tall coffee, jump on the nearest highway and drive until daylight just to see what's there. I am suspicious of them.

Me too, Mr. Steil;)

Wish I could be there with you folks. It would be a wonderful drive from here, but life sometimes, well... quite often really (LOL), gets in the way. I hope you have a great trip Bob, and everyone there has a great time.:D

Arrived about 3:00 local time after an hour side trip to look at a 62 Cruiser parts car I bought. No problems at all, and enjoyed every minute[^] Toughest thing thus far was getting my tired old laptop loged on to the 'net in the room[:I] Heading over to the event center to take a look around, then the welcome dinner. I shall return!

Return trip: Left CeRap WAY too soon for my liking; but I had to get back for the Syracuse Nationals, plus a possible shot at driving in a race in NY Friday night... and I had to pick up a Cruiser parts car in IL on the way. So at 1:00 sharp I started saying goodbyes, and by 4 or so I was on the road[:I] 230 miles later I picked up the Cruiser (more later) and proceeded on. Stopped for the night about 11:30 about 40 miles West of SB.

After my customary 6 hours of sleep, punctuated by some idiot fellow traveler who had a German Shepherd that barked the whole time:(. Washed up, scored a coffee, and got back to it.

About 10 miles West of SB I saw flashing lights on the Westbound side. A tractor-trailer had climbed the guardrail, tearing the trailer apart and depositing a huge load of cardboard all over the highway; traffic backed up for miles! Luckily it didn't affect us Eastbounders... saw a couple of fender-benders along the way, including several as I came into Buffalo in a downpour. One happened as a lane-hopper whipped into the safety cushion I keep in front of me way too fast and clobbered the nearly-stopped car in front of me. The impact was enough that I could see his hood fold up from behind[:0] Nobody hurt, just metal. At least it's one less Honda on the road;)

Races: We were dominated by our old nemesis, Mother Nature[xx(], so I got home before dark. As expected, no problems!:D

A few travel notes:

Guys- Why???- Why do men feel the need to pee with the seat down in public bathrooms and pee all over the seat??? Sometimes we have to sit, you know! Puhleeze!

Length of trip- My odometer tells me it was about 980 miles between home and CeRap; my iPod tells me it's about 163 songs, give or take.

Breathtaking- The Chicago CityScape as seen at night from the Interstate heading East is one of the most beautiful I've ever seen![8D] Next to the former Sears Tower is a building that has what looks like a huge lighted crown. I'll have to look up what that building is. Spectacular!

Breathgagging- Just down the road a small piece from Chicago is the worst stretch of scenery I've ever seen along the highway- the portion through Gary, INhttp://www.mysmiley.net/imgs/smile/sick/sick0025.gif Sure hope the city is a LOT nicer than the part represented from the highway...

Nervewracking- Coming through Chicago I missed the turnoff for I-90 and had to get back to it... Jill, my GPS, must have a sick sense of humor, since she took me down 71st St.- about a mile-and-a-half of the roughest-looking area there is... at 10PMhttp://www.mysmiley.net/imgs/smile/scared/scared0001.gif Could NOT wait to get back to the Interstate!

Favorite new road name- Just West of Sandusky, OH... the perpetual adolescent in me giggled when I saw Fangboner Road on an overpass signhttp://www.mysmiley.net/imgs/smile/happy/happy0051.gif (admit it, at the least you just smirked when you read it!;)). Imagine having to tell somebody you lived on that road[:I]

So I guess that's it for the travel portion... I reiterate the point I tried to make in the original post: Sure do love the road tripshttp://www.mysmiley.net/imgs/smile/cool/cool0012.gif

Bob

Many years ago I visited Virginia City Nevada. The restaurant washroom (unisex) had a sign over the toilet which read:

If you sprinkle
when you tinkle
be a sweetie
and wipe the seatie

Too many guys ignore that sage advice!:([V][xx(]

Bob, you would not believe the depth of slothliness possible till you have seen the toilet in a Greyhound after several hours on the road.[:0][xx(] Add to that the trash that has to mark up everything they touch, be it with paint or pen...

Oops, almost forgot! Glad to hear you got home okay.:D
