I love the tyres! Though, they would be a dis-advantage in a horse-drawn vehicle as they would provide resistance, not traction as intended. Still, a very interesting vehicle.[8D]

My guess would be that the wagon spent time being pulled by a tractor. When I was a youngster there where old horse drawn wagons around here that had been adapted to tractor power. Rubber tires of any kind are MUCH quieter on pavement or gravel.

Rubber tyres on a horse-drawn, or tractor-drawn, vehicle are much more quiet. In fact, in many cities, at the beginning of the twentieth century, rubber tyres were required on all vehicles. That went for gas buggies and horse-drawn, wagons, drays, buggies, and carriages of all descriptions. In fact, the Amish still use equipment developed (and sometimes manufactured) at that time.
