  • accessory outlet...

I wired up a dual cigarette lighter type, accessory plug and it won't "charge the Garmin"... According to my VOM, both outlets are hot, but ?

Does the +12 have to come through the center point at the bottom or does it not make a difference (which will give me another problem)
    thx

Does your charger work on another car? Some of these devices have a fuse in the body of the charger plug. Check and see if yours does and make sure the fuse is not blown.

On your 12V outlet, the centre point should be the "+" and the sides will be "-" if connected properly - it does matter for some equipment.

As stated, the center needs to be positive for some items.
When I purchased a new 1987 Avanti, my radar detector or CB would not work in the lighter outlet. It turned out that the lighter outlet was wired backwards. I took the easy way out and reversed the leads on the item that I wanted to plug into the outlet.

Right you are, the center post has to be +12. I changed the wiring and everything lights up.
          Thanks..

This is really odd and rare, but check the length of the adaptor plug to be sure it is going in all the way to the center contact of the receptacle. I have a couple that were wide enough to prevent them from going in far enough. (Yes, that is what I said, make your jokes silently to yourself! )
