well, i finally got some slides of my dad's 56 Sky Hawk.
289 with auto trans.
he sold it to a young man who attended Cal State Los Angeles around 1965.
my folks were living in Alhambra at the time.
this pic was taken in 1963 south of Victorville, CA.

so, any info on it would be great. CA plates read JYC 500.

this was the last of 4 studebakers my family owned.
we also had 2 53 champs.

That was a very desirable and rare car, it looked great with the Optional Wire Wheel Covers! [:p]

It would help a lot if you could come up with the [u]Serial Number</u> from an old Calif. Registration Card, Insurance Card, Policy or Statement etc. a copy of the title or anything in any family records that shows it.

The license plate and number are likely long gone, but the car may NOT be! It could be registered in another State, and belong to a SDC Member. :)

What's up with the side grille inserts? I've never seen 'em on a 56. jimmijim

Since the pic was taken in 1963, it would be pretty easy to go to the Dealer and buy the matching egg crate side grille inserts for a '58-'61 Hawk to give it a more complete look, and it looks much better than the '59-61's did, without those ugly Parking Lights stuck in the side grilles.

thanks for the reminder on VIN info. that'll be a hard find. i'll do my best to get more info.
i've already contacted the Sky Hawk registry for possible info.
i'll see if i can get more info on the side grilles too. i remember my dad telling me the orig. hubs weren't that great and he picked up the wires.

It appears that this number may be open/clear on the CA DMV website. It doubtful this car is registered under this number in CA.

I had a Sky Hawk back in the late 70's that fits your car's description. I sold it to my tire guy's son here in Hawthorne, CA. I can can do some investigating as to the whereabouts of the car. Bud

you can get YOM plate info from DMV online?
i called them over a year ago regarding orig. plates and didn't know about online services like that.
i ended up getting transfered to sacramento.

davis, they allow you search for new plate registrations on the DMV site of all kinds. You can type in a combination to see if it's currently being used for availability.

Well, my dad called me this evening regarding my email to him about these pics and info.
here's more info.
He purchased it used from Larry Wright Studebaker Agency in Pasadena, CA on Colorado Blvd. in either late 1962 or early 63. it already had the black and yellow plates. the agency went out of business in about 1965.
Purchased for the price of $600.
the car had: 289, auto trans, power brakes, power steering, tach, radio, dual exhaust, white headliner and two tone white and gray seat upholstery. No A/C.
he had repaired the kick panels as they were pretty trashed. probably fabbed up from cardboard.
it was the factory black on black and sometime in 63 he got rearended in LA. the trunklid was replaced and instead of the key lock and turn mechanism, i guess standard for Hawks, it was replaced with just a key lock.
he wasnt happy about that replacement. but the car was repainted black again.
the skinny whitwall on the one pic was due to the fact that wide whites were harder to find and the rears were still good.

No VIN info.

His major complaints were that when it rained hard, the car leaked, mostly in trunk and the checking trans fluid was a bear having to pull back carpet and pulling a small dipstick.
yes, he's kicking himself for selling it. but, at that time, servicing and parts were difficult and he didnt have anywhere to work on it. he wasnt a mechanic.

still kinda cool to hear all this info.

forgot to add, he sold it in january-feb. of 1967. not 65 like i had thought.

Nice car! After a '64 GT, that's probably tied with a '63 GT as my next-favorite Hawk. Ironically, my brother-in-law has a solid black SkyHawk in his garage in NW PA, but it needs most everything and has sat there for probably thirty years. It was sold new in Meadville, PA though.

davis, For info on YOM plates call 1-800-777-0133. About 3 years ago I needed information on a car I had and the woman at the local DMV told me to go to Sacramento to the archives. Drove 400+ miles and when I got there It was a big hassle finding where the archives are at. It took more than 3 hrs. waiting, holding a number to be called. Only to find out the archives are 11 miles away from the Downtown DMV office. The archives are under ground, you have to take an elevator down after going through an interview as to why you need this info. When I get down there they tell me that there was a fire in the Micro-flich section in 1985 and a lot of the old records were destroyed. So fill out a paper and if we think you need that info and we have it we will send it to you in the mail.

BTT.

i'm still looking into this VIN for info.

i posted this car up on Youtube and got an email from a gentleman in Oregon who mentioned that his now all-white 56 Sky Hawk was from a man in San Diego, CA. area but the car was originally all black and had some significant CA history.

i don't want to get hopes up until i get a VIN number to verify.

Good luck, stranger things have happened. When I got back in the hobby, I bought a Chevy powered, 63 Avanti. At my first meet, I met Dan Webber who offered to sell me the correct Avanti engine and I bought it. When I checked the engine number, it turned out to be the factory engine from the very same car.:)

Ask your father if he bought the car from Lloyd Pearson Studebaker on Colorado Blvd in Pasadena. Larry Wright Motors was on Foothill Blvd in Monrovia. I sold Studes at Larry Wright in 1955. He went to Dodge' I believe in 1958(he didn't like the quads on the 58 Studes)and closed in 1960. Lloyd Pearson was also Mercedes in 1966 whe he took on Volvo.

Dick, does your friend still have that Hawk sitting in Altadena? Would it be too coincidental to be that one?? Same year, maybe?

Pretty far down on the page. But not only had the grille pieces, it had the GH piece on the hood and fins!
