  • T86 Top Shifter with AC

Will the AC evaporator be in the way if I install a top shifter on my T86?
Does anyone have a measurement from the firewall to shifter on a 64 Lark?
Is the top shifter from a T90 (pn 18880.02 omix-ada)a direct bolt on to a late T86 or are modifications in order.

I have read lots from my search on this but could not find anwsers to these questions.

    Thanx all

    Interesting question!
Wasn't the top shifter (or floor shifter) a Taxi option only?
My gut tells me it would be in the way.
But my steering wheel is in my way, too![:0]

Jeff....maybe it's time to upgrade to 'fly by wire' that would get that ring out of the way

Ya...I think this was a Taxi and possibly a 'rural router' "option"

A Taxi with no AC...how could that be? (sarc on)

Billy, some of the late T86s have the two front top cover bolts spaced a little closer to the center line of the tranny than the other two pair. The T90 top covers I've seen all have even spacing on all three pairs of bolts, like the older T86s do. Not sure at all about any fore-aft variance in bolt hole location. But I think the cover can be modified, by slotting the holes, to make it fit.

As far as the A/C goes, you might have to heat the lever and bend a dogleg into it.

I do not think that the Omix part will work on a 64 vintage T86, the cover/top shift assembly has an inset of the front two cover bolts and is not a big rectangle base like a truck T86 or T90. Take a look on page 215 in the 3 speed section of the 59-64 chassis parts book to see and illustration

You might check with SASCO, they had a number of 1965 Taxi transmissions when I bought one a year or two ago, they were asking around 250.00 and it will ship UPS. Well worth is for a top shifter that will work on a Lark T86, and cheaper than buying all the parts seperately from sasco. I believe that the part number is #1565176

As far as will the shifter wack an AC unit? I dont know, I would have to measure the shifter cone and the angle of the shift lever to hazard a guess and since I would like to have ac in my 62 hardtop I would like to know too.

The 'Kart Hauler' ('53 Coupe converted to pick-up) is for sale on ebay. The write-up states that it has a T86 with overdrive. If it does, then it must have the T-90 toploader conversion. My eyeball tells me that the shifter would get in the way of an under dash evaporator. You may be able to contact the seller to ask about the shifter location and dimensions.
