How many quarts does the 259 take?

Six quarts if the engine has an oil filter and five quarts without a filter. Bud

The early 259's had 6 quart oil pans. What year is the engine?

The '51 to '55 V-8 's 232, 224, & 259's did have 6 Qt. Oil Pans.

Then all '56 to '64 Studebaker V-8's except R3, R4 have 5 Qt. pans.

Some dipstick tubes are no longer correct length or correctly assembled, causing slightly different readings, so that I usually completely "hot" drain a "newly found" car and fill when level, with 6 Qts., run engine and check the oil level.

On the upside down spin-on oil filter '58 to early '62's, pull the dipstick, wipe it down with engine on, then kill engine, run around and insert dipstick and read level before the filter starts draining, it seems even with the built-in restrictor and the drain-back valve present in only some filters, the level goes up quickly. So this method works to determine where full is, on each car.

Most of mine read right on full, but a few do not. I never use the AC PF24 shorty oil filter on full-flow engines, I want full 1 Qt. size as original, since they fit fine with the correct R/H exhaust head pipe.
