  • SNM in OCW

The June 25, 2009 issue of Old Cars Weekly has a nice full page article on the Studebaker National Museum (SNM).

However, they did perpetuate the error of calling the Lincoln carriage a Studebaker. The historic Lincoln carriage was purchased by Studebaker. It was part of the Studebaker Corp. collection that formed the nucleus of the SNM collection. [I know that this was recently covered on the Forum, but I decided to reiterate the Lincoln carriage fact.]

Edit: The three other Presidential carriages (Grant, Harrison & McKinley), at the SNM, are Studebakers. It is just the Lincoln carriage that isn't a Studebaker.

I do want to comment tht I thank OCW for all of the good coverage that they give to Studebaker/SDC.

Heck, if that's the only thing they got wrong, let's consider ourselves lucky.
I wish that was the only misconception the public had about Studes....

That is not the only thing they got wrong! They credit Cannonball Baker with driving the record setting Commander across the country in 1927. Baker never drove Studebakers but tried to compete with them in other cars. Ab Jenkins drove the Studebaker. The author also has the museum's address wrong. I am sure there are other mistakes but I have better things to do than correcting all of OCW errors.

That seems the be the prevaling urban legend connected with Studebakers.

Well, that and the ghost of Harold Chruchill that haunts my Lark.

My parent's current issue of [u]Reminisce</u> magazine, in their regular feature "Guess the car," features a Studebaker. And of course some of the "facts" about the company include "The carriage used to carry Lincoln to the theater was built by Studebaker." I think this really reiterates one of Fred Fox's maxims: Once something is (incorrectly) in print, it is really hard to get it corrected.

For folks with absolutely no knowledge of Studebaker, even incorrect press about the marque can be to our benefit.
Fortunately, when it becomes important enough, SDC is here to clear the misconceptions.

All in all, it was nice to read about the Studebaker Nat'l Museum in OCW. I agree that, even if there's an occasional mistake, every time the name Studebaker is said or written, it's good.
We're living in a time when too many people have never even heard of Studebaker.

The July 9 issue of Old Cars Weekly contains my letter (edited somewhat, but that is okay) with the Lincoln carriage correction.
