  • New Avanti History

Patrick Foster has a nice 15-page history of the Avanti (all the way up to 2008) in the 1st Quarter 2009 issue of Automobile Quarterly.

Any idea where one can pick up a copy without getting a subscription? Amazon, Barnes & Noble and Borders don't have it.

It's been years since I ordered an individual issue, but they can be ordered by phone or on line from AQ. According to the subscription info in the latest issue, individual issues are available for $25.95 plus shipping. They often have sales of back issues, but not of their most recent issues.

The issue in question is Vol 49, number 1.

As some of you might already know, Automobile Quarterly has published a very good 16-page feature on our favorite car in the current issue, Vol. 49, Issue #1.
AQ sells backissues, but since this is a current issue, they are not yet listed for sale by the company.

The AOAI has secured a supply of the current issue and are offering them for sale on our own website, http://www.aoai.org for a special price, reduced price from what AQ normally sells their issues.

If you have seen this publication before, you know that they have a long history, since 1962, and both the Avanti, Studebaker and Raymond Loewy, Sherwood Egbert and the design team have been featured in this publication since it's beginning. Although called a magazine, it is actually a very nice hard-bound book with no advertising. Just very well-written feature articles.
        It is a hard-bound book, 112-pages total.

We'll have a review in the next issue of Avanti Magazine, but you can get your own copy of AQ now, from our website.

Skip, he originally wrote the same article for Auto Quarterly Vol> 37 #1 with published date of 10/97. Pat is a personal friend and a great friend of Studebaker and other indedependent auto manufacturers. AOAI has it on their website for $19.99 with 10 sold in the first hour today. If you wait until AQ puts it on their site as a back issue you will pay more and wait longer to get it. If in a hurry go to www.aoai.org and order now thru their secure site.

The Feb. 2009 edition of "Collectible Automobile" also had a great story by Bob Palma titled "Muscling in on Detroit: High-Performance Studebakers of the Fifties and Sixties"

            Check out the cover ...

Is anything known about the fate of the Avanti factory and equipment? I know the guy is in court but is there a chance that production can restart or is this the end. Interesting magazine, but somewhat repetitive (to me at any rate) as once you know the Avanti story (and no current production) what more is there to write about?
