  • Chrome Ring or No Chrome Ring?

OK guys, I've been on the internet the past several days looking for pictures of '63 4 speed Avanti's and I've only found 'One' that had the chrome ring under the round bellows.......was that standard??????

    What are you describing?
    The shifter?
I am struggling to figure out what you mean when you say 'bellows'..
    Let us know...

Yes, the shifter bellows.....a few cars have a chrome ring on the console under the round shifter bellows while most, no chrome ring shows, just the bellows against the console.

Not to be nit-picky (and I realize this doesn't answer any question at all), but this flexible cover is more correctly referred to as a "shifter boot".

My 63, (early #1780) only has the rubber boot. Studebaker International sells the repros, and they fit nice and look just fine.

I just put in one of those replacement SI shift boots too, and it fit fine...
There is no chrome near the shift boot on this Avanti either.

I wonder if that trim ring in question is an aftermarket item?
I have never seen one to know enough to comment.

Now why would you want to put the shifter in the trunk? [)][)]

It sticks in my mind that the chrome bezel was a '64 running change. It's been a long time, but I'm pretty sure my transition '63/'64 Avanti (R4670) had the chrome.

Thanks Paul, that's where I must have gotten confused.......keep forgetting about those round headlight transition cars. Somewhere I'd gotten in my head the '64's had a square shift boot? I need to email you some pics of the engine compartment, at least I got that one right. Any idea if Mr. Sadler is still alive?

No square shift boot from Studebaker - those would be aftermarket boots / bellows / shifters.

First design Avanti = no chrome trim ring.
Second design (woodgrain) = chrome trim ring.

I was in contact with him for about a year after I bought the stuff, but after that he never responded to my letters. He would be pushing 90 now if he is still alive- he was 65 when I dealt with him in 1985. He was planning to live on his restored WWII tugboat/yacht so he was hard to reach at best. Neat guy! He was a WWII RAF Spitfire pilot, raced Austin Coopers, etc.
