  • Insurance Issue

Has anyone else not been covered by their regular insurance due to age of vehicle? I just got off the phone wih my agent and she said and can't get regular liability like I have on my truck because the car is older than 30 years. I just want the basic for the Lark since I only paid a couple grand and that is about what it is worth.

I have had excellent luck with Haggerty's, not to mention saving a lot of money.

There are plenty of companies that will insure it if it's being treated as a collector vehicle, and only driven occasionally. But they won't insure it if you're using it as a daily driver.

They won't give you liability...or collision?
I can't imagine them not offering you liability if you have a policy on your other cars.
If you need collision, don't even try to use your regular insurance.
Go to a collector specialist...[u]IF</u> it's not a daily driver.

If the cars worth what you say, it won't be expensive.

Second that. I've had Hagerty's for nearly 20 years. Good company and MUCH cheaper than any standard insurer. Of course, collector car insurance presupposes that you will not be using your Lark as a daily driver, since these policies generally limit the number of miles you can drive per year.

I had my 56 stude insured for two years as a second car with the same ins company as my 1997 daily driver, libility only. Just changed to Grundy, full coverage. Not saying you should lie but how do they know if it is in a garage and if only liability why would they car. now if you want theft, fire and col. that is a question they could ask. Good Luck.

I use Farm Bureau. They don't have a problem insuring a 58 Commander for a teenager to drive. But then everything I have is with them. Home, life, company trucks, family car, and they broker my antiques through J.C.Taylor for me. One agent takes care of everything. I like it that way. NT

My agent has to inspect anything over 20 years old (They have always done it from within the office but do want to see it in the parking lot). Otherwise Ive had no problem with liability. I THINK in SC anyway they cannot refuse to sell you liability (its state required here) though they can require a safety inspection. Steve

Until two years ago I had three Studebakers insured through Allstate under a standard policy, just like the one my F150 and my wife's Jetta. Full coverage liability and collision.

I switched the Studes to Haggarty's once I got a lockable garage. As said before much cheaper.

                      Yes...
I had Farmers Insurance as a provider for my '49 2R10, and then the '37 J5... Sold the 2R10 and after about a year they came back and told me the '37 was 'out of variance' and I had to remove it from my policy or ALL my vehicles would not be covered.
Not only that, but I had to prove to them that I had the '37 insured with someone else.
Hagerty got my business because it is an agreed value policy.
A lot more expensive because it is modified, but it has been ok.

I agree with JBOYLE. A lot of companies don't want to offer "full" coverage (comp and collision) on a regular use older vehicle due to problems with parts and determining value, but I've never heard of a company declining liability coverage exclusively due to age. If that really is the case, then any number of major companies would be glad to have your business.

I am insured through USAA (military) and they would insure my 1963 Cruiser under liability but the 6 month cost was more then the year through Hagerty. Go online and check out other companies to see if they will cover you and then go back to your agent and say you'll be changing and see then what they say.
