Most vacuum gages I've seen are for fuel economy purposes. What can one tell from the factory vacuum gage on an R2 Avanti? Thanks.

Vacuum gauges can tell you if your timing is early/late, if you have a burned valve, etc. Generally if your engine is healthy. The boost side of the gauge is only for one reason...

It will also tell you of a nonfunctioning combustion chamber or a miss, which could be a really fouled plug, a broken spark plug wire, or from my experience, a plug broken off at the porcelain.

As Pat Skelly says...(about instrument lights)
"Who wants to see bad news?"
WTH are you doing looking at the gauges at a buck twenty for anyways?
The vacuum gauge is great for tuning at idle...
Set your points (dwell).
Adjust your timing.
Adjust your idle mixture for the highest vacuum reading you can get.
Adjust your idle RPM.
Drive the snot out of it.

Years ago a buddy of mine had a cherry 64 Grand Prix. When I asked him what the vacuum gauge was for he said "when the engines running its over here (far left) when you put your foot in the gas, it goes over here (far right)....LOL....classic! Now, years later I have another description of engine accessories, the "orange whirly thing"....thanks Matt!!

My Dad had a '63 Grand Prix (first new car he ever bought...it was totaled with only 2k miles on it). If the car came with an automatic transmission it had the vacuum gauge mounted on the console. If the car came equipped with a 4-speed it came with a tach instead. After the GP was totaled he replaced it with '64 Bonneville which he gave to me when I graduated high school. Best darn car ever built by anyone anywhere! If I could go back and have any car I've ever owned back, it would be that Bonneville.
