the attacned pic shows a type of terminal block/cylinder attached to the steering column under the hood that appears to be part of the gear selector (I have an Hawk, at, 289 v8); it has three wires connected as well; there also appears to be two lube nipples; Can someone elighten me as to the electrical functions, and does this thing need lubricated? tks,

That would be the neutral safety switch, it will only allow the car to start in park or neutral There are not any grease zerks there, you may be looking at extra terminals for backup lights on that neutral safety switch.

Just above the Neutral switch/Backup Lt. Sw. on the shift lever, you should have a Zerk fitting to grease that. It has nothing to do with the switch [^]

Valleyguy; is that car by any chance a 1957 Silver Hawk that was originally Red & White, then painted Lt. Gray primer?

That engine looks awfully familiar, like the one I built for my oldest son Ron. He traded it for a early Honda Civic [xx(] in the 1990's in the So. Calif. area. It had a Flight-O-Matic Trans. that I put a Low Gear start into. It had a Carter WCFB four barrel carb. and giant 2 1/4" exhausts and receiver type trailer hitch.

Thanks for the info; makes sense now.. (I've got to get me a wiring
diagram....especially since I want to replace the wiring harness
at some point);

StudeRich, This car is supposed to be a 1958 Silver Hawk; I did get a build sheet based on he VIN from the Studebaker Musuem showing the color and options; Original color was Black, the color it was when I purchased it, and came with auto trans, 289v8, TT rear, padded dash. All those things are present...(except the black paint.. the car is now in primer, and there was no red showing when I stripped it; I have not checked the engine numbers and other numbers for authenticity....The dual exhaust that came on the car, while new,
has 2 inch pipes. Don't think it has a first gear start, although
I;ve only driven it short distances about 3 times. No trailer hitch present. Interestingly though, I did buy the car from a guy in your state (Bow, Washington) in 2003. Had it shipped to Florida, sight unseen (big mistake,, I don't recommend it); so I
guess it's possible the engine might not be original to the car. ??

You're in Virginia? Funny thing, I ASSumed you were in San Fernando Valley Calif. near LA! On the West Coast, "Valley" means there! That's why I mentioned the Red/White '57 S Hawk!

here refers to this part of Virginia as "the valley".
