Obviously, without checking, could be lotsa things. What you are saying is--it is HUNG in 2nd (that is, it decelerates rapidly when you let up on the gas in 2nd) or it won't shift INTO 3rd (the engine races when shifting out of 2nd)?

I had one once that just had no 2nd gear. You put it in D--nothing--engine raced. I could take off in low, then shift to drive, skipping 2nd. Very irritating. Finally had the 2nd gear band replaced and the valve body cleaned and it works fine now.

My broken record response it to check the fluid level. If there is a serious problem up inside the trans then you will have a delayed reverse along with a no third problem. Otherwise look for a stuck 2-3 shift valve.

My first car was a 59 6 cylinder Lark that suddenly wouldnt go forward, only had reverse. Towed it home & sold it. New owner asked if I would tow it to his house, which I did. When I got there, he started it, put it in drive & took off. I never found out what might have happened. I would have kept the car if I had known it had fixed itself!

Try some Trans-X available at auto zone-advance auto parts and other places. A type of additive that sometimes will free up a sticking valve body which may be your problem. jimmijim

Check the governor. See if the weight pin broke. You'll see an empty hole if it is.
