  • Stupid question from a newbie

I am looking to rebuild a 49 3/4 ton Studebaker pickup. Is the sheet metal (fenders/cab/bed) the same as the 1/2 tons?

    Yep.

Nope!! The 1/2 ton trucks sit on a 112 inch wheelbase, the 3/4 ton trucks sit on a 122 inch wheelbase. Therefore, the beds are different by about 18 inches in length, however the rear fenders and tailgate would be the same. The cab is the same as both use the C2 cab.

Thank you so much for the information. If I get the right truck, then there is some of the sheet metal that is interchangeable.

Ha, Not all the half tons were short wheelbase. But to be even more specific, were the one tons the only trucks available with the nine foot bed? And three more notes of caution when dealing with trucks of different years: The back windows were two different sizes, the windshields were one piece later on, and the beds were a few inches wider in later years. Also, after 49 the front shocks were tube making for different inner fenders. Oh ya and the 1 1/2 tons had larger wheel openings in the front fenders.

Our friend was asking about a '49 2R series 3/4 ton truck. There were no 2R series 1/2 trucks built on a 122 inch wheelbase. All 2R5's were shortbeds on a 112 inch wheelbase. The long 1/2 tons using an 8 foot box came in with the 2E series Transtars, however, the bed fenders and sides should be the same.

Part # 1654006, a 9 foot box, was available only on the 1 ton chassis in the 2R series. [8D]

Check this one out. Is it the 50 model 3/4 ton?

It's a 49-53 based on the front and back glass. Ask if it has tube shocks in the front or lever shocks (making it a 49). Those wheels look almost like one ton. Maybe somebody on here could ballpark the vin. I always wonder how a seller can be sure of the year with no title. If it has a V-8 originally, it's not a 50. It would be good to narrow it down before you buy it so that the bill of sale reflects the right year.
