  • '62 GT Hawk models

    'morning all,

Well Friday has dawned here, bright and a little cool, (we're going into winter down here), so no one has pushed the button and ended the world over night My question is, has anyone ever made a model, plastic or otherwise, of a '62 Hawk, or later model Hawks for that matter. I've found Avanti's and older models but no '62's.

    Cheers

The only one I've ever seen is the EKO Hawk made in Spain(?)..

I believe someone makes resin cast kits and sells them on ebay occasionally.

Matt, Back in the mid nineties Mini Mrque of England put out an excellent 1/43 scale '62 GT Hawk limited to 250 only. There are four colours in red, blue, brown & black. I have #26 in blue. They are fairly pricy if you can find one but watch out on Ebay & good luck.

Actually, they are still being made...in a few different colors too!! I have several originals... and some of the new ones too. Just do a google search for "EKO Studebaker"... and it will come up with several sources for the GT Hawk and Avanti cars.

The EKO Avanti is the one on the far right. I have a number of the Avanti's and Hawks for my own layout, which funny enough, outnumber the Brand X cars [)]. These are pretty sparse in detail and ever so slightly oversized(1:86), but with a little paint and some patience they can come out much better looking. This one I also added a little wire and a couple of other extra details to give the Avanti the optional dual antennas and it stayed that way until one of the antennas was knocked loose. The car in the center is a Varney 53 Starliner(I have the 61 Lark version). The Avanti was mine which stayed on the club layout until a couple of years ago when I took it back for reasons not worth mentioning. It was also placed in the front of the layout where the public could see it during open houses, so for awhile it did it's representative part very well .

I find this photo rather curious. I did not know about the EKO Studebakers until the day I took my son (Cam) when he was 3 years old... to a local model railroading-show. I was perusing a layout.. when I spied the front of what looked like a White Hawk... sticking out of a hand-built garage. I inquired if I could look at it... and the Railroader obliged. I mentioned that I had been buying the "New" Johnny Lightning, Racing Champion Studebaker models for my son...
He pulled tha car out of the garage and gave it to Cam... (free). I put a $10 donation in the clubs fund jar later.

The one he gave me turned out to be an early original. It has bakelite wheels and a lead weight inside. I found out quickly that they were still making them... and purchased all the different colored examples they had. They had 4-different GTs (lt blue, drk blue, yellow, grey), and 2-different Avantis (med green, grey). I think there are several more colors available... but this was all the supplier had on hand.

These EKO's are what I presume to be much newer models. They are essentially a plastic body with a plastic underframe and very simple plastic wheels. They don't weigh too much as they don't have any weight to them. I'm the same way as I can only recall only a couple of colors they came in for the Hawks and the Avantis. I do know that Tom Karkiewicz(the man with the big white bus) has a whole box full of them. For less than 20 dollars an individual can populate their layout with a whole army of these critters .
This one here was my contribution to the club layout as it didn't have much in the way for Stude content. The members were for the majority Big 3 guys so I was the residential Studebaker expert on the matter, so to speak. I would move it around the layout, sometimes it was in the gas station over on the right, sometimes it was out on the street somewhere. It did provide coverage for the layout, and I was gladly available to provide answers people had about the "odd little vehicle" on the display .
LOL, I still wonder if it was possible to put two black strips behind the car(at the chagrin of a couple of the members there). Lord knows the real ones have a tendency to do the same thing when you really get on em[)].
