  • 61 6 Cyl engine question

Are the 6's prone to some condensation and sludge in the oil caps, until run hot?
I had the head professionally rebuilt, with all new everything and 100 miles on the rebuild.
Oil levels and coolent levels are ok and no contamination.
What theromstat do I need? Thanks.

I would thoroughly clean the cap with solvent, let drain, blow dry with compressed air if the filter media is not clean, replace it.

Check the crankcase breather tube or PCV system whichever it has, the engine needs to breathe in, in order to breathe out. A properly working PCV system will help remove moisture that causes this.

If you are saying you never fully warm the engine, you need to do that. Do not just let it idle, drive it 15 to 20 min. going at least 50 MPH.

Also remember the OHV 6's are usually geared to low and tend to over-rev, so don't ever drive over 60-65 without Overdrive.

If you live in a warm climate, use a 160 Thermostat, if Cold use a 180 degree, never use hotter than 180.
