  • Carb Pricing Question

If I were to make available R1 and R2 carbs using the top plate from the Carter AFB combined with the new Edelbrock AFB bottoms and internals, would there be much demand, and what sort of pricing would I need to translate that interest into sales? All surfaces glass beaded with new fasteners, gaskets, needles, seats, etc.

It sounds like they would be very well done, but you would have to get at least $400.00 for one and more for the R2, and you might have close to that into them, if everything is new but the reconditioned tops etc.

I guess now-days with nicely restored Avantis selling for more, it's just going to cost more, to have a show condition one anyway.

For the folks wanting these hybrid animals, is that price range ($400)acceptable for the R1 and another 150 or so for the R2? An all out R2 with choke removed, O-ringed throttle shafts, dual fuel inlets, and several other modifications would be another step. The carbs would come with a tuning kit which would allow the owner to make minor corrections to air/fuel without disassembling the carb. Large changes could still be addressed by pulling the top and rejetting. Future rebuilds would be simple with the Edelbrock kits.

Is a 2 week lead time too long, or would you want to order out of stock?

You don't have enough of the air horns (tops) to do them without exchange do you? That would require sending an old Carb. to you maybe with the car disabled, so another 2 weeks with a garaged, non-driver show car, parked should not matter.

The R1 carbs might be a tough sell with S.I. selling the Edelbrock to R1 adapter plates. You might consider just leaving the new top on the Edelbrock and either selling the adapter with it or letting your customers know where to purchase them.

The R2 would be better because there currently isn't anyone selling an air horn to fit the Edelbrock.

I built up an adapter ring to fit an R2 air hat to an AFB a while back...

Never played with it enough to see how much lower it could go...
But the ring raised it up enough to make Avanti guys noses bleed

That'd be a nice pic if it didn't have all that yellow in the background...

Jeff, I would love to have enough room under my Avanti hood to raise the roof on my carb bonnet, but I'm already touching as is.

Rich, I do have enough air horns to get started. Of course, it would cost less if the owner supplied one. Might be able to do a core charge and return arrangement. If folks aren't married to the Stude fuel inlet position, I have a lot more tops. In fact, I'm working on an R2 for myself with dual fuel inlets at the rear and a few other "tweaks".
