i found a 1963 lark with 3-speed on the columb. no o/d the grill and taillights. the engine looks like a r1.chrome valve covers and chrome air cleaner (but is not an aftermarket air cleaner) in my research the r1 was avaible with hd 3-speed.was it on the floor or on the columb? plus it has the halibrand mags on it. the car would not start and the owner won't replace i
the battery.how many r1 with 3-speeds came from the factory?

You will want to get the Engine Serial Number that is STAMPED into the
cast iron block on the drivers side front corner of the block.
    This post shows the location:

There were very few 3 speed Standard Trans. R1 cars built, I doubt that you could find 3 non-Avanti examples left in the world. However rare does not always equate to desirable and valuable! [:0]
They could have been Column shifted, or used the Taxicab floor shifter.
The T-86 Transmission used was quite weak for a 240+ H.P. Engine.

To find out from the Production Order available at the Studebaker National Museum, if the car originally came with it's current engine, you will need the Car Serial Number from the drivers door forward post. Also there are members here who have lists of Serial Numbers of the Jet Thrust Avanti Powered Larks and Hawks.

I believe Studebaker offered an accessory dress up kit that would make an ordinary V-8 appear the same as the R-1. If it is an R-1 it would have an engine number starting with the letters JT, otherwise the regular 259 started with a V & 289's with a P.

Does the engine have a breather tube coming up the left side of the engine from the oil pan? If not it's probably just dressed up to look like a R1. Like the others said check the engine stamp for the JT.

BTW I just love those 1963's. Good luck with your find.
