  • Anyone have knowledge on repairing the antennas

Hello, A while back I posted a topic on a person who repairs 1947 to 1952 Studebaker antennas. I just purchased 3 cores. If this guy can repair these antennas, then I need to ask. Anyone have any knowledge on repairing these antennas. If one person is doing it, then there is a way. Where would you find the material to repair? Anyone's opinions welcome. No matter how vast or little your input is, it will be welcomed.

Never knew of any repair manuals. Depends on what needs repair. Cable broke? Hub spring broke? Frozen winding hub? Retainer able clip to winding hub broke off? Antenna mast not functioning? Just take them apart and discover whats in need of repair and have a go at it. Most antenna mast are stainless steel, except for maybe the first (largest) section, soak in penitrating oil to free up.

Many years ago I repaired one for my '51; never had occasion to do one since.

The top-mast (solid wire) was bent and scratched and would not recede into the topmost tube. I very gently peened it to straight, used a jewelers file and fine sandpaper to make it true. Cleaned the remaining masts with 0000 steel wool.

The cable was not connected to the mast. I soldered it.

The spring steel driver had worn in to the fiber disc and would only spin, wearing it further. I layed a thin piece of rubber between them and put a fine star washer on the nut.

The ground strap was broken. I soldered it.

I didn't know what I was doing then and probably wouldn't know if I tried it again. Just dealt with each issue as a separate problem to solve.

Once a year I run a little 0000 wool over it and give it a spritz of PB Blaster. That way I won't need to fix it again.
