The serial number indicates that this is a Commander built in South Bend.

HF5 shows that this is Commander State sedan and the 3709 is the tub number for the shell. V-8's were available in '51 with engine numbers starting at 101 and up. There were 21,134 of these models built in all plants. the only way to varify if this is the original engine for this car is to get a copy of the build sheet from the Studebaker NAtional Museum. Cost is around $25. Most likely this is an original combination.

The 535601 number you found is an engine block casting number used from 1955 to mid-1962. Try to find a STAMPED engine number at the front of the block on the oil fill tube from the number you found. That number will tell us what year and cubic inch the engine is (unless someone bored, stroked, etc.)

The 51 engine would have the number stamped at the back of the block, to the passenger side of the distributor.
