  • Hillman & Rapier = Raymond Loewy Connection

Interesting read from the Sunbeam/Rootes Group.
You can see the Loewy touch..

Before these cars, I believe Loewy was called on to do the design for the 1953 Sunbeam Alpine. It was a highly modified version of the Sunbeam-Talbot 90 4 door. Its 2.5 ohv engine with exotic tuliped valves, louvered hood, sodium filled exhaust valves amoung others helped it set speed records with Sterling Moss driving. The car was tall & narrow, but so beautiful. Sort of like a scaled down late 30's Packard. A 1954 was my second car, found for me by the service manager of the Studebaker dealer in Plainfield New Jersey, which was also a Sunbeam & Mercedes dealer.

Thanks for the post, it bought back memories. When we were first married we had a Hillman Husky that was great fun.

      Happy Trails

A neighbor lady of mine had a new Hillman Minx convertible. I did a lot of riding in that car. I remember liking the car and ,if IIRC, it had leather seats and real wood. When she traded it in, the dealer, who I later worked for, kept it for his own personal use.

That roof line on the 2 door is certainly familiar isn't it. I can also remember a little Hillman Husky as a family car. I can't believe we drove/rode in that thing from North Hollywood to Omaha and back at least twice. It was small. The gray one is exactly like the one we had. There were 4 of us. I was in the 2nd grade and my brother was about 4 at the the time.
