View Full Version : Water pump installation tip

As mentioned in another post, today I installed a new water pump in my '53 Commander Starliner. It is pretty easy in that car, but I still used a tool(s) that I made some time back when I had to change an Avanti water pump. I don't take off the shroud or remove the radiator (fear of damaging the radiator when struggling). I found a couple studs that had the right thread. I cut them to about 1 1/4" in length (longer is ok unless you have a viscous fan). I cut screwdriver slots in the outer ends of the studs (in case one gets in a bind when I install the cap screws). When I'm ready to install the pump, I screw two of the studs (finger tight) into opposing holes on the water pump snout. Then I bolt the the pump to the water manifold (make sure the weep hole is down- learned the hard way). To install the pulley and fan I just slip them over the two studs then start the two cap screws where I don't have the studs. When the cap screws are started I take out the two studs and install the other two cap screws.
This may be old news to some, but it sure saved me a lot of time and frustration in trying to line up holes by the Braille system.
