  • 1949 Commander starter interchange

A friend asked me to find him the starter above. I am wondering what other years and models used the same starter. I have a bunch of Champ starters. Any thoughts?

He has no starter? Or, someone told him his couldn't be rebuilt?
I'm pretty sure starters from a Champion won't fit the Commander Six.

The parts book calls for Auto-Lite Starter # MCH-4001. Fits 47 thru 49 and probably would fit on '50 although they changed starter suppliers for that year to Delco. A quick comparison of parts books shows that 2R, 3R and E series trucks with the Big Six used the same starters at the Big Six-powered postwar cars. That opens up ALOT of possible donors for you!

        Thanks Mr. B
I looked in my frame book 47-50 and it looks like their are some shared internals with the champ but the cases are different. I"ll search around.
        Best regards to all.

hey Mr. B - since you apparently have the books I don't, do you happen to have the Studebaker part numbers for the early 6-cyl. starters? I actually was just working on the x-ref for tag nos. vs. Stude nos. last night because I saw a lot of questions coming up about them...
