  • Difference between HD FOM & Powershift

I was looking at my 63 dealer accessory price list and it lists the HD FOM at about a 10% upgrade over the Powershift. Keeping in mind the PS floor console would have to cost more than the colum shifter that is the same as a standard automatic. Wheres the price difference come from?

For 1964, the HD FOM listed for $230, and the Powershift $273. It seems odd that '63 would have been so different.

The Powershift also required the bucket seat option, $103.

The RQ tells me that it is for an Avanti, so that is a horse of another color! Not comparable to Lark/Hawk.

This must have been printed in early '63 before Power Shifts were available in non-Avantis, that makes perfect sense.

Just like a J8 is a body code for a Daytona Hardtop, an RQ is the body code for an Avanti.

I guess what I want to know is performance wise how does a HD FOM stack up with a Powershift? What is the technical difference?

the HD FOM is basically what it sounds like, just like a regular FOM but beefed up and with an external cooler. Still starts in second gear and shift pattern is PNDLR. Powershift is basically a HD FOM with a different valve body; shift pattern is the more modern PRND21. You still have the 2nd gear start with the powershift, but you have a true manual first gear and don't have to do the column-shift shuffle to hold it in second.

The HD FOM and the Powershift both use the heavier front band 1543070.
