  • Rear drum brakes

Does anyone know what the max turn diameter is for the rear drums on my 57 Hawk?. They are 10 inch drums---tapered axles---6 cycl car. They are .050 over the 10 iches now. ie---10.050 dia

    Thanks----Dan

ps--I can't find anything stamped on the drum itself

I have 10 inch 59 Lark hub that is marked 10.090 if that helps.

There is a fairly easy way to see if a Studebaker Brake Drum is "within spec". If you look at the brake-riding surface, you will see a chamfer cut along the top ridge. You can safely remove material up to that chamfer. If the chamfer is gone- the drum is outside of useable tolerances.

That one is fine Dan, the limit is .060 and since most are made of unobtainium a bit more will work.

You do know that a 6 Cly. car came with 10 inch front and 9 inch rear drums right?

The V-8's are 11 inch front and 10 inch rear.

So unless you have 11 inch fronts to go with them, those 10 in. V-8 rears will be too sensitive if used with 10 inch 6 Cly. fronts. [:0]

I have a set of 9" rears here (drums and backing plates) if needed.

The one I have that has 10.090 I'm going to paint RARE on it and hang it on the wall.

Don't toss it, the hub should still be good to install on a new drum only, if you locate one! [:0]
