I am interested in finding a dash plaque like was used on the 1961 "gran turisimo " Hawks...My understanding is ..upon request of the buyer ..the dealer would order a numbered plaque engraved with the customers name on the 4-speed Hawks .Since my Hawk does not have one on it I would like to find one ....new or used......or have a good picture of one that I could have one made by.
Thanks,
Ken

Ya know, I think I have one of those around here someplace. I'll see if I can scare it up. No promises tho. You could use it to have one made like you want it.;)

You are in luck. There are 4 of them currently in an e-bay auction, but they are for the '62 - '64 GT models. The opening bid is $6.00 and the link is below:

How does the '61 plaque differ?

Your 1961 looks incredible, you know they only made 3,000 and some of these 61's so they are rare, I did read about the dash plaqueand yes they did call it gran turismo however they held off the big advertizment until the next year.

Pretty sure the 61 has a large gold hawk bird and the serial number of a car.. I'd have to dig it out... I wonder if that car is still floating around?

Does anyone have a 1961 hawk with an original one on it that they would be willing to take and post a picture of it ?

There's a pic of the 61 dash plaque in the June,1989 issue of TW. It is all black with apparently a silver stripe around the edge, and silver lettering.[no bird-the 62 plaque is different.]
This issue also explains that Studebaker never promoted any 61s as a 'Gran Turismo'.-and that the GT misconception was traced to many sources. -"The main source is the ads showing James Mason and Lucius Beebe becoming owners of Gran Turismo Hawk[s]number 12 and 15.The words Gran Turismo with their noun implication and capital letters was the product of some enthusiastic employee of Studebakers advertising agency, theD'Arcy Company".
The dash plaques were available to anyone who bought a 61 Hawk, not just the 4-speed cars.
Total production of 61 hawks was 3929.

chevparts, glad you found the pic-I don't have a scanner or I'd have put it up for you. Hot wheels,I've never seen ANY 61 with a dash plaque, not that I've seen a lot of Hawks, but when I do see a 61,the plaque is the first thing I look for.
From reading the article I mentioned though,it doesn't indicate that you had to buy the 4-spd to be eligible for the plaque.
BTW,I'd like to have one too! chev,if you find a source, let me know!!

The dash plaque came with any factory ordered Hawk, and blank plaques were at the dealerships for installation on dealer stock.
If your Hawk was ordered from the factory (Through a dealer, of course), you also were sent a 'thank you' letter from the VP of sales (IIRC).. I have the letter in my Hawk file box. I have plaque number 0911 and it was an a/t Hawk. A very plain, few option, Hawk.
BTW... The GT Hawk references were only used in a few ad's and the '61's were never referred to as GT Hawks. That started with the '62 model year. The GT Hawks also had a dash plaque, but it was different (as shown by some of the photo's here)

I've never seen a 61 with an automatic that had a dash plaque. Sorry if I steered you wrong.
