  • How much do you know about Studebaker History?

...or why isn't this article in Stove-Huggers, where some might say it belongs?

Wasn't CTL Industries owned by Studebaker? I think it was one of the companies acquired during Egbert's diversification program.

I would recommend buying or renting The Right Stuff as it well documents the concern of the heat shield separating from the capsule. There is a '63 Lark in that movie.[^]

        That's right, Art.

Quoting from The 1964 Studebaker Corporation Annual Report:

CTL: Missle / Space Technology Division. Research and development capabilities at CTL were expanded in 1964 to meet the growing demands of the defense and aerospace industry. New concepts developed by CTL for improved materials to withstand high velocity re-entry and severe rocket engine conditions are under evaluation today by government agencies. In addition, investigations and studies were undertaken in 1964 for commercial clients outside the aerospace industry.

The hyperthermal testing facility of CTL is now in full operation and has been used extensively by many government agencies and prime aerospace contractors for materials study. This unique test facility permits simulation of re-entry conditions and rocket motor firings. Production has continued on re-entry bodies, nose cones, rocket motor hardware, insulation, and other components used in the nation's missle and space programs.

So even though Paul Harvey is gone, "now you know the rest of the story!" BP
