Turn signal switch 1959

I'm betting someone has has this happen with theirs. The turn signal was getting stuck when the switch was up for a right turn. It would not cancel and I had to give it a hard slap down to get it go go out of that position, next it started doing the same thing with a left turn. Now it moves freely, will indicate a right turn if i hold the lever up. No left turn signals at all. Is it a switch or would something else cause this. I have a feeling this is gonna be a very simple answer. But before I tear in I'd like to have an idea of what to expect.

There is a cancellator cam located behind the steering wheel. You remove the wheel first using a steering wheel puller, keeping the large nut on the end of the steering shaft just enough so that the puller does not balloon the end of the steering column. Underneath that is the turn signal mechanism, upon which the cancellator cam sits. That cam is available from our vendors. Before you disassemble that switch, make sure you note the side of the cam that is sitting up. There are several types of switch, and this cam fits all of them. You do not have to take the switch out of the car. You will probably find the pieces of the broken cam at this time also. The left turn signal bothers me. IMHO, that is probably something else. If the cam is badly broken up, it might not be hitting the little slide switches inside the turn signal. That would be the first place I would look. Mine had a broken clip on one of those little switches, and I cut a new one out of a coke can. About the same thickness of metal. Hope this helps.
