I have a 8-track ,cb ,am,fm , would fit a GM. anyway It lights up ,and I guess I get fm, ,but the cb doesn't work. Is their some inherent glitch that these things go bad after awhile? I had a smaller unit 20 years ago ,and I think the same problem happen, after it worked for a few weeks , then it lit up, but didn't work.

Mike, being a combo unit, the cb unit may not be of great quality since it is a transceiver. Your definition of 'doesn't work' needs a whole lot more information. Is there power to the unit? Does the receiver work? Does the transmitter produce a carrier? Is there modulation in the carrier? How much wattage output is there? What are the swr's? I used to repair cb's for an occupation, and there are a number of reasons the user would describe the whole unit as 'not working'. But there is only one fault, and from your post it can't be diagnosed properly. Take it to a cb repair shop.

Back to basics - When tested, did you have a good ground as well as the power lead on the radio? Did you have a proper antenna, for CB, attached properly to the radio? It may be failure within the CB radio itself, but I like to start with the basics.

Do you have all of the boxes?I pulled one of these systems out of a cadillac for a truck Dad used to own and remember it was quite involved.Seems there was a couple extra radio size boxes that hid under the dash involved, one of which held the actual CB radio parts. It was a long time ago so my memory is not complete but it was a PITA to get out so we never reinstalled it. I may be able to find it when I visit Mom next week.Stevesigpic

All I remember about CB's is don't key the mic without an antenna or load coil hooked up. If somebody did that with yours it's probably toast.

Also remember that an ordinary antenna would not work on CB, FM and AM!
I think I still have the converter box I used to have rigged up to a two part antenna with a boost coil in between the AM/FM and the CB portions, so I was able to plug in three radios! A stock '64 Stude. AM, a FM/8 Track Player Radio and a CB unit. That special dual section Antenna must have been a J.C. Whitney gizmo.

First off, make sure this joker is getting power.Someting should light up, either the meter or the dial or both. Maybe there's a seperate lead for the CB power.Make sure its grounded,as another poster has said. Now, the main question is where's the speaker? If this is a high tech back-in-the-day unit,it may not have an internal speaker.A lot of these units tied into the front dash speaker(s).Establish this before condemning the unit. Now,using the CASO approach, stick a bicycle spoke or a bent coat hanger where you would normally screw in the PL259 connector.Put it on channel 19 or the local 'homey'channel (in my area it was channel 22).Be prepared to hear Hooked on Spanish;when you do, you know it's working.I have an old 23 channel GM factory under dash CB.I was thinking of 'converting' it into a Studebaker unit by sticking on some small lazy S decals, like the ones on the top of a Stude pen. They would cover the little GM emblems, and a 23 channel would be 'year-correct'.Sorry for rachet-jawin' on here good buddy,I'll just back it on out of here and 10-27 to the jukebox. We gone!!Bye-bye!!!

Hey rusty ,I like it. I like em all. I had come into a couple of things here. I inherited a Huge " Boat battery box, and I had an Idea. Why not mount the speakers in the ends of the Battery Box, then took a Huge piece of wood , and that would serve as the console top. Drill, cut ,chisel, till the radio hole was cut out. Mounted it thru the cut out. I do have a cb antena. This also has the antena lead for AM, FM. Now I have also wired the cigertte plug in from the beginning of time. I have to get the ant from the garage tomorrow, since I'm off. The ground at the present is connected to the cassette ,am, fm, which is also riding shotgun, in this contraption . One day at time.
