  • another question

This is another in my series of questions which everyone else seems to be able to answer but totally baffle me.

Today's question (second one actually) concerns my '55 Champion and its unwillingness to run. It has a Carter WE Carburetor. If I pour gas into the carb it will run (revving really high) and then stop. Obviously the car stops running when it runs out of the gas poured in.

When I pull on the throttle linkage I see a stream of gas squirting into the carb, but the car will not start without pouring the gas in. It will not stay running at all.

The fuel filter is new and gas is getting to the carburetor.

I am a broken record. Check your carb float per shop manual. You may not have enough gas in the carb for it to run.

it shouldn't rev "really high" unless the throttle is open or you have a severe vacuum leak. Make sure the throttle is closed to the idle position.

Sounds like buddymander has a point. Try
starting and restricting the air flowing
into the carb. This will tell you if you
have a bad vacuum leak. Of course, look
into the carb, before starting and be sure
your throttle butterfly is closed and not
open. Just a thought, but one other thing,
is the accelerator return spring on right?
