  • '58 sedan speedometer trouble

Being true to her name, Christine ('58 Commander) decided she doesn't want me to know how fast I'm going now. The speedometer won't go beyond 10 MPH. [}] I removed, cleaned, and greased the speedo cable a couple of weeks ago. Anybody got any ideas on how to fix this? There's no odd noises or anything like that.

Sorry to hear that Matt, it COULD be a problem.

One way to check is: put the rear wheels up, clear of the floor on jack stands and disconnect the cable from the Speedo, run it in Drive and watch the cable maybe you will see a prob at 10 MPH, if not run it up a bit more and watch it through several speeds if it seems smooth, then it points to trouble in the Speedo head.

Sometimes you see just the speedo works for sale, maybe SASCO has just the drum and gear part of your Cyclops Eye Speedo.

Just don't forget to use the brakes, before shifting after spinning it up! [:0]

If the speedo head is the same as a '56, I have a good used one here you can have . . .

I bought a new speedometer head from SI. For my 56 Parkview.

I'll see if it's the cable or not tomorrow. Allan, thanks. I may take you up on that.

Yes, the works inside will fit '56, '57 and '58 Sedans/Wagons.

I went with Rich's idea and unhooked the cable from the speedometer. Rather than put the car on jackstands, I drove it and held the cable end, and it didn't spin. So I pulled the cable out and it looks brand new, so I thought for sure it must be the gear in the trans.

So I hooked the cable back up to the speedometer, and now the darn thing works.

                Just Christine being Christine.

After sleeping all those years, I guess she's still waking up!

You'll get the bugs out soon. She needs love and exercise, and that's what your giving her.
