  • Zip Van Coverage in April Vintage Truck Magazine

I was at Barnes and Noble earlier this evening and noticed the current edition( April) of Vintage Truck Magazine had a nice article on Studebaker Postal Zip-Vans.

Here's a link to their website with the articles first page in PDF format as a teaser:

    How about that...

My granddad's old junker Zip Van makes it way into a magazine.

Could someone pick up a few copies of this issue for me? No bookstore close by here...

Thanks a lot Jeff. Yep, that's the old Zip Van that I paid $40.Bucks for in i987. My son and I dragged it home from Agusta Ga.with a tow bar. We didn't know back then that you can't tow a Studebaker that way. The man I bought it from assured me it would run and I took him at his word. The engine was stuck and the trans was burnt up. So much for trusting people. Anyway 10 years later it ended up in the museam in SB. We are proud of it. It was restored and placed in the SNM by the So. Ga. Chapter, SDC. NT

The article does mention that the van was "given a cosmetic restoration by the South Georgia Chapter of the Studebaker Drivers Club before it was donated to the Studebaker National Museum in South Bend, Indiana."

Great to see the Zip Van getting magazine exposure.
People enjoy seeing something unusual and Studebaker seems to deliver!

Somehow they overlooked a generation and skipped right to Matt's Scotsman in the new August issue!![:0]

Any "ole postal workers" on here to attest to the vehicle & how they liked/disliked the Zip van in everyday service?

I'm a rural mail carrier, and I've often said I'd like to have one. If I could find a decent, running one reasonably I'd give it a try on the route just for fun. I think it would be a great promotional tool for both Studebakers and the P.O. Mostly I'd take it to shows just for that purpose; but if it works as good as I think it would, I'd actually put it to work when the weather is good! Imagine the extensive coverage she'd get doing what she was made for, all those years ago... and the points I could score for Studebaker during that coverage[^]

Of course, there would be a question as to how many times 40+ year old technology would realistically be able to stand 560 stops and starts per day... but I think I could upgrade one enough to make it work!

I've always got my eye open...........................

Nice article. I've always felt that the Zip Van was very modernistic, considering that it was designed in '63. I have to admit, I even call current postal vans zip vans, but with a small "z". I've been corrected on more than one occasion.
