update on the machine shop and line bore that caused the cam gear to crank gear tolerance to be too tight--
machine shop called me yesterday and said they had installed the new
"shaved" cam gear and it fit perfectly. I asked him to scribe or stamp something on the gear to indicate it was for a line bored block. I will have to pay 150.00 for a new "shaved" gear, done by the shop that orginally built the billet aluminum cam gears for Ted.
Just glad it worked out !!:D

I always ask the machine shop to check line bore on any engine I have them build for me. Have built several Studes and up to this point none of them needed line boring. This one (1963 289)did and it moved the front of the crank up about .002-.003. I think the clearence on the front gears are .001 so when the front main was tightened down, it put a slight bind in the gear to gear mesh. With a chain drive like most cars have that would be no problem but on gear to gear drive any crankshaft movement would effect the gear clearence.
