  • Hurst shifter on 53 with 3 sp. o/d Update

Anyone have any pictures showing a Hurst shifter
on a 3 speed t86 with o/d. Or any advise on this.

Just had a long weekend, and finally decided to
put my hurst shifter in. It took three days. Two
days to finally convince myself to cut a hole in
the floor. and one day to fabricate and install.
I used a bracket simular to Joe's (59r2). This is
somewhat of a project, BUT, if you haven't shifted
a new Hurst shifter in a long time, IT WAS WELL
WORTH THE EFFORT, to sit and look at the old Sun
tach., shifting through the gears, and imagining a
cruise. Thanks, again for everyone's help with my
    project.

I'm not sure of the brand shifter I installed but it was a PITA. I'll try to dig up some pics and post them.

I've used home-made brackets on both the T-85 with the side cover, as well as the T-86 with the top cover. Here is a highly technical and, if I do say so myself, very professionally drawn, schematic drawing of the bracket I used on my T-86. If the detail of the drawing is too overwhelming, don't feel awkward about asking questions. (JK) I can't find the picture of the T-85 bracket, but you get the idea. On the T-85 is used 2 of the side cover bolts and one of the rear trans bolts. The T-85 bracket did not have a top piece, but it did have the tab to catch the rear trans bolt. I then used 7/16 inch threaded rod and bent my own shift arms. They both worked fabulous.

I think I must be a retard, cuz I can't seem to get photobucket to cooperate with me sometimes. I tried this several times to get it to rotate and make it smaller, but it does not want to change it for this.

Those are great drawings. Was the trans an OD. That was the difficulty I expereinced was trying to clear the od solenoid.

There was a thread a while back about this topic. There were even some pictures of shifters used with overdrive transmissions. A search should uncover the topic.

Both the T-86 and 85 were both OD transmissions. That was why I made my own bracket. I had a bracket for a 3 spd shifter which would not clear the solenoid. When I made the brackets, I just made sure the side bracket, where the shifter mounts, was high enough to clear the solenoid.

Thanks, Everyone, for the help. I appreciate
the drawings and the advice. I did the searches
and only came up with T85 photos. I would still
like some T86 photos, if anyone has them. Thanks
                        a lot.

                          flashback,
A few years ago I developed a backet for a t-86 to mount a hurst competition shifter. Is this the set up you are looking for . Hope this helps.

Thanks again everyone, GREAT info. Joe, I can't
see the manual lever. Does it still connect the
same? I appreciate all your help, everyone.
