  • Question about 6 cyl engines...

Is there any difference between a 1948 and a 1960 champ 6?? How hard would it be to put one from a 1948 champion into a 1960 lark, using the 1960 3 speed? Pitfalls, complications? Any insight is appreciated.

    Thanks!

basically the same engine but there are differences. You'll probably find that the engine mounts are all together different. Also I thin some of the 40's oil pans have the sump to the front of the engine not the rear. I'm sure there are other difference that I'm missing as well.

I seem to remember an adapter is needed to convert the bellhousing to fit the block, between all those years there are are many changes on the 170. You will have the small main bearings and crankshaft as it was changed in 1955, the pan to fit the car, probably will not fit the block and the oil pump.

An OHV 170 engine from a late '62 or '63-'64 with the full-flow oil filter would be a bolt-in.

48 Champion engines do indeed have the sump in front to clear the planer front suspension.
