View Full Version : Daytona street rod ?

I got a call from a fellow that wants my 60,000 mile 64 Daytona to rod. The good news is he may push the price up and I can keep the near perfect driveline, the bad news is it's such a sweet car as-is. He'd rather have a chery finned Hawk, so I guess the Daytona is a smaller loss of a nice factory car.
Not knocking rodders, or their wanting nice cars to start with, just if I had my choice, I'd rather see the car kept as a Survivor. Please out bid him. :)

I hate to see clean survivors go that way. When I bought my Daytona, it was a roller with missing engine and trans. This is what I'm doing my rod project with. I don't think I'd have the heart to tear apart a clean one :(.

Good news, bad news story for me. It'll go way over the best offer I got from the internet Studebaker guys but I still hope it ends up with a ebay'er that'll enjoy it as it is ather then modified too much.

The only modification I'd do to it is R2 it. :) Send the rodder over to me with a bag of money and I'll sell him my 63 and I'll buy a nice complete one that wont take me three years to complete!
P.S I'll even throw in the chevy mounts I pulled out of a 65 Daytona

Excuse me ? The car is no being offered for sale here, it's technically already sold since it's made reserve on ebay. We talk about ebay cars all the time, I see no reason why I can't talk about mine as well.
In retospect, I guess I should not have made the joke about outbidding the street rodder, but it was followed by a grin icon.

You're right about the "please outbid him" comment. But now you're saying~
"We talk about ebay cars all the time, I see no reason why I can't talk about mine as well."

IT ALREADY IS BEING TALKED ABOUT~ IN THE OTHER POSTS!!!

All I'm saying is I think putting your comments on the post that you had going would've been within SDC's policy~ starting a new one is not~ in my eyes.
Maybe I'm the only one who sees it that way...

In the whole scheme of the universe, I don't think it matters, new post, old post. I for one think it's very interesting reading what might or might not happen to a very nice original Daytona

Dave, were you having a bad day?[:o)] As Steve said, this isn't a big deal. I was interested in what was happening with it too. It didn't matter to me if it was added to the first post or if a second one was added. It was also rather obvious what the subject matter was about.

Hope today goes a little better :D:)

That picture reminded me of a beater lark at the South Bend meet many years ago that had a sign on the windshield that I can't recall exactly but went something like: "Hi my name is Betty and I'm a 62 Lark that George bought for $50. I thought I was going to be restored but instead I was loaded up with George and his friends and driven across the USA to this meet"

As I am charged with administering the written forum advertising policy enacted by the SDC Board (as a result of considerable input from the forum members), I offer these observations:

Announcing that one's own car is going on Ebay "Thursday night", as occured in the "Story of Rose" topic, should be considered an "advertisement" IMO.

Announcing in a separate post that the car is actually now on Ebay ("64 Daytona on Ebay") was a second "advertisement". The distiction is "My car is on Ebay" versus the usual "I saw this car on Ebay" posts.

As the separate topic "64 Daytona streetrod" contains "Please outbid him" that technically constitutes an advertisement.

So, "technically" this has exceeded the 1 advertisement per week policy. Yes, it's splitting hairs and I certainly would not classify it as aggregious. But, as it has been called into question, I am posting my thoughts for informational purposes along with a request for everyone to just please be careful about such things.

For future reference, it is my opinion that had all the above posts been added to the orginal thread on this car (making one continuous discussion) it would have "technically" been within the policy.

I can solve my technical errors in the future by just posting a car is on ebay once and trying to limit all discussion of the car under the same thread. I just thought the street rodder market topic was a different subect but should have left the outbid joke off the end. Forum members never buy my cars anyway, but some like to read about them on ebay.
It's hard to jump back and forth from the wide open news group and here without slipping up now and then.

Not wanting to 'stir the pot' so to speak.....
I think you are in a 'Catch-22' with this policy about advertising.
Just look at the tag signature lines used (by JP for example)..
JP sells Studebakers. A lot of Studebakers.
It is his chosen method of financial gain to supplement his retirement...
(pretty fancy set of words used to avoid saying 'job', huh?;))
His signature line is his car lot inventory.
Has been for years. Nothing wrong with that.
Hard to stop all the freebie advertising that sneaks in.
But... I have a suggestion.
Why not put in a separate forum that is ONLY Stude stuff that is for sale or trade.... But...
(there's always a 'but', isn't there...)
But make is so the post's automatically delete after, say...5 days.
'blink'...gone!
You want your 'ad' to stay up there longer...
Buy the ad space, and get an extension.
Maybe just link it to the regular SDC want ad section (or vice-versa).
This way you can enforce a 'no ad' rule on the general discussion, or tech forum, while still offering a place for all of us to put up an occasional Stude, or Stude part for sale.
That way, those that aren't shopping, or selling...
Fine, They don't have to go there..
Just a thought...
Jeff[8D]
PS: Not pickin' on you JP....(yes I am;))

This way you can enforce a 'no ad' rule on the general discussion, or tech forum, while still offering a place for all of us to put up an occasional Stude, or Stude part for sale.
That way, those that aren't shopping, or selling...
Fine, They don't have to go there..
Just a thought...

PS: Not pickin' on you JP....(yes I am;))

Since I am the root of most of these issues, I'll just be more careful in the future. Mr. Shaw has enough work as it is and there would be no way to keep a ad from creeping in with the general discussions. i.e, my sig line or a question about my plans for a car I'm discussing say a technical issue on.
As I said, I never actaully sell cars on this forum, so it's a moot point, sold a few dozen on the news group though. :)

Very well said, JP. I have talked with you at York and even though I didn't buy anything from you, you have given me good advice. I also tried to sell you my 63 Lark Custom 2dr. one time. I like the way you start off your eBay ads by saying: As some of you may know, I find nice Studebakers around the country, fix them up and find new homes for them on Ebay. That lets everybody know what you are doing. I think it also instills trust, IMHO.

lstude, thanks, but my posts have been a issue for the 10 years I've been on the net and I'm still trying to deal with it. I have some ideas of what causes the little (and big) discussions, but never nailed it down.
I work on Studebaker 6- 10 hours a day, almost everyday, so I'll post more often then others, perhaps the nail sticking up the most gets the hammer more often.
Although selling a lot of Studebakes gets them on the road again and gets us new club members, I may be driving the market up to some degree, and some don't like that. It could be that some don't like the idea of making money and having fun at the same time or it could be that it's not the content of my posts that are a issue, it's the author.:)

JDP~ It's great to know that cars are being saved, and members are coming into the club. I couldn't give a rip about the prices on the market~ I have my cars, and need no more!!! I don't think that we've ever met, and from what I've seen here on this forum (I don't go elsewhere) you seem like a nice guy.

It's true- I'd love to do just what you do~ to a point. Maybe once I retire from my current job, I'll do something along the same lines. But first I have to finish the commitment I made to my Country. There are plenty of cars out here just waiting...

The only issue I have is when the rules are broken. Others have done it and gotten booted off this Forum...

Sorry I said what I did the way I did~ next time I'll just shoot you a friendly email and be done with it.

Ok, I'll chime in again. I like the ads. It's a big part of the hobby. And yes, you may or may not ever buy a car from JP, but I think we'd all miss knowing when they were for sale and hearing the various stories related to each one. Gosh, most of us may be old, but we're not dead yet. Ads are an integral part of this hobby. And I think it keeps things interesting. By the way, I don't know JP from hoot, but he seems like a straight up guy to me. He buys and sells, and makes no bones about that. I'll bet there are alot of guys out there who wish they could do the same thing. And as the evil twin said....."petty, just totally petty."

What's your point?

I have never complained about stuff for sale here, repetetive post's about Ebay cars, or even the almost monthly 'What size tires fit...yada yada yada.
If someone wants to make rules just to enforce rules... Let them step in and fill the job position. Bob's got enough to do now.

That car was a blue 64 4 door Daytona out of PA. It was one of a flock for sale with a 63 or 64 Hawk.
Last year I had it in S.B. In the car corral and sold it on the way home. You sold me some dash witches that day.
Funny that. You just paid for them and I was there and said, kind of kidding, "I wanted those", you handed them to me and I paid what you paid. Nice.
I searched all summer for another car. I found a 64 daytona just like Rosy. Not as nice or clean (it had the poverty caps, I love those). It followed me home.
The guy had it on ebay. I emailed, then called, then bought it.He stoped the auction for me. Nice guy too. He had 6 cars, this was next to last. Like you he wanted to sell the car to someone who wanted the car. Not to rod or speculate.
I am heating it up alittle but it will still be studepower and powertrain. thanks again Rich

Good news, the car is going to a Atlanta Ga. Shriner as a parade car, he won the bidding at 8K for those tracking values. He's repaint it, add Studebaker AC, but not modify it.
BTW, did Bob add a spell checker to the forum is just a new feature on my Firefox browser ?

I haven't noticed a spell-checker kickin' in, but a grammar-checker would be handy too.[B)]

Might be part of Thunderbird 2.0 then. A misspelled word shows up with a line under it, then right click for a dictionary to correct.

Found it, it's part of the Firefox 2.0 upgrade.

"Inline spell checking: A new built-in spell checker enables users to quickly check the spelling of text entered into Web forms (like this one) without having to use a separate application."

Thanks, JP...I upgraded to 2.0 and the spell checker works great! With my spelling abilities, perhaps my posts will be understandable now ;)
