  • Custom Rims for Avanti

I have seen several of your pictures on the forum or in TW or Avanti Mag with custom rims on your Avanti's. Several have the magnum 500 style, some appear to be the Torque-D style, etc.

Please let me know what you are running on your Avanti and proper sizing such that it clears brake components and doesn't interfere with stock suspension or steering and most importantly doesn't damage the fireglass wheel wells.

    Thanks

I might be wrong, but I thought that the Magnum 500 was original equipment on the Avanti II.

I have 16X7 Alloys with a +15mm offset, which equates to about 3/8".
They were probably manufactured for a Jeep, but I can't say what year, probably mid 80's. I looked long and hard for the same offset as the Magnums I replaced, so they wouldn't look extreme. In hindsight, anything with a zero offset would be just as good.
With wide 15 " rims, the tires you use will be just as much an issue, Lower profile will push the widths into the steering components. However, going to 16" rims put the tie rod end inside the rim, so tire issues can be a moot point.

I don't know what the wheels on that Avanti are, but they are not Magnum 500's. This is a Magnum 500 and they were available on GM, Ford, Chrysler and Avanti models. Only the size and the center caps are different.

My '70 has its original Magnum 500 wheels and the build sheet lists them as an option and the 1970 price list shows them as a $250 option.

Way back when I owned a '63 R1, I had Keystone Klassic wheels on it...the car looked positively sinister with them.

For any wheel wider than stock, or tires bigger than stock, I would recommend anyone thinking of changing from the stock rims to make sure their front coil springs haven't sagged. Tires on wider rims may rub when bottoming out. I found that out the hard way.

I agree with you Tom (Swifster) The rims on geojerry's Avanti are not Magnum 500's. The picture of the rims with the Mustang logo is the true historic Magnum 500. I will say that I do like the rims on geojerry's car however.
What I would like to know are what some of you are actually running on your cars. Brand of rim, style, size, backset and model or part # if you have it.

                Thanks, John

Another way to answer my question might be this.... If I was buying custom rims for another classic car (x-brand & model) which car or cars would have the same bolt hole pattern and about the same rim width and backset. T know that Ford & Mopar used same bolt pattern but what models had about the same size rims?

                  Thanks, John

The backspace is the important number. 15"x6" or 15"x7" should fit with no problem depending on tire size and backspace. I haven't gotten far enough to worry about the wheels yet, so I can't help on the backspace.

Because after Karl, I have the biggest rims. Though the offset isnt
right for a stock Avanti, so you would need spacers to make it work.
Also, the Avanti II has MUCH less room to "breathe" than a Studebaker
Avanti due to the filler piece. An Avanti II's body will contact the
stock wheel if you put larger than factory size on the rim. Our '69
had cracks on both sides. Also, with an 8 inch wheel, you are really
pushing the boundries between the fender and the front upper zerk. If
you go with an 18 inch wheel, it LOOKS like you can clear the upper
zerk fitting. This is why Karl went with his even larger wheels.

That Black Avanti that has NHRA NATIONAL RECORD HOLDER onthe doors looks to have late model Mustang wheels on it. I know some are 16" wheels as my g/fs daughter has a 2007 V-6 stang with them. I looked at them close, cause they look sorta like the original Halibrands on the 64 Larks.
