...'cause I might could get some kind of excited over this first-series Commander (execrable spelling aside):

If you can get past the chrome slab on the front, the Commander is really a great car. Transportation for you might be a bit rough, but the underneath of that car is really good. I know, 'cause I've got one that isn't that good.

That would probably be a fun car to drive. The '55s had a lot of improvements over the earlier models and the 224, basically the same as a 259/289, but with a very short stroke, would wind like crazy. One of the better moves (not) I have made over the years was passing on a rust-free early Commander 4-door with overdrive because the seller couldn't find a title. Price was $100. The car had belonged to her former Studebaker dealer dad and may have never been titled. She was executing her dad's estate and they had sold his house- car had to be moved. I suspect it got hauled to a local salvage yard.[V]

Here was one I bought from Bob Peterson, cleaned it up, put tires on it, fixed a few things, then sold it. It is one of the few I really wish I had kept. It was a 6 automatic, but drove very nicely and had plenty of go (with the 1st gear start) as a casual driver.

I am really torn..... My Dad loved the 55 Commander he had. I think they are pretty cool, even with the big chrome nose goblin... What I dont really know is if I like the 4 door or coupe better.

This car was on eBay already with a $9500 opening bid. It didn't get any the first time, and with the $8950 price on it now, I doubt it will get any bids this time either.

I love '55s. I have been eyeing this one, but it will not make to my house as I have two other projects that are being neglected as it is. My son had a '55 Champion four door with the butter knife trim. I thought that car was a great daily driver. Eventually I inherited it from him and when I went to do some body work I found that it was in a lot worse shape than I had realized. I hated to let it go. the 185 six with the overdrive tranny performed well and the car didn't handle that bad for what it was.
