I wrote in a month or so back about the difference between partial flow and full flow oiling systems. The members of this forum were extremely helpful in helping me identify my crate 289 as a 1963 full flow engine. My dilemma now is with the cylinder heads. I am switching from a 1961 partial flow 289 to the 1963 full flow short block 289. The chassis manual shows the heads having different part numbers (#537571 - 1961 and #1557579 - 1963)but they share the same head gasket. The shop manual shows the 1961 as having a comp ratio ot 8.8:1 and the 1963 as having a 8.5:1 ratio. Can I use the 1961 heads on the 1963 engine? What other parts are going to be different between the two engines?

Yes....and nothing.

The earlier 53/54 heads were smaller in port area, but they'd even bolt on and work....with different push rods.

Verify, measure your chambers and be sure. Use the smaller chamber heads.
Actually the difference in the ratio's you mention aren't that big a deal power wise. I'd be tempted to use the most ready to go set if your watching the pennies.
