I have to ask , you think this is the real deal or you wouldn't have bid on it. Would this be a car that you kept? or waited a few years and sold? Very interesting find for sure, the seller does not say why it is no longer in a museum.

Barrett-Jackson is a joke to begin with, and it's ruining the buyer's market for any high-end collector car. It's just a TV show. :)

The add sez museum condition. Doesn't say its been in a museum. However, looks like the "museum" overlooked the rust on the one piece with 4066 written on it..

The 4066 picture is the front of the hood,(pix is upside down) the rust is surface rust on the radiator support. The rust there does not care much about the miliage, just the 40 plus years right over the radaitor.

Randyr asked " you think this is the real deal or you wouldn't have bid on it."

If it's not, it's a very clever deception. It's not a restored car in the normal sense, it is showing some patina here and there. The clues I picked up are the condition of the steering wheel, the asbestos sleeve on the choke heat tube and the NOS Allstate spare tire.
Could be a 10,000 mile car that had the speedo unhooked too. :)

Some Avantis did originally come with Sears Allstate tires. My 1964 Avanti did. Sears and Studebaker did have an advertising promotion where (I seem to remember one) an Avanti with Allstate tires was driven to California by two young ladies (their names escape my memory). This Avanti was purchased by Joe Erdelac in Cleveland, Ohio. He had the Avanti shipped back from California to Cleveland. I remember seeing it in his garage in the 1970s, along with several other of his low mileage Avantis, such as 5643 R3. A guy in Ohio bought the car and trailered it to an SDC International many years ago. This is probably the same car.

The seller is incorrect about the radial tires part. The Sears Allstate tires used by Studebaker on Avantis and in the promotion were bias ply tires.

The Survivor Avanti I sold had Allstates from the factory. (Spare was still in the trunk) Actually a nicer car with 40K miles then the ebay example.

15 bids and up to 30k with 8 days to go! Maybe the bidders have looked the car over before it was even offered. If not, it does amaze me that people will buy a car this age for that money without inspecting it firsthand. [:0]

WOW, that is one awesome late '64 Avanti! It does look like the real deal, that spare tire and especially the wheel looks incredible![^]

A couple of interesting things though, every late '64 I have ever seen was Burgandy Red, I don't see them having two Reds in the same year, since there were only 5 colors, 6 with the Black that was replaced with Gray. This is the way better, looking '63 Maroon Red. Like everything at Studebaker that was NOT supposed to happen, I suppose it could have been special ordered, all the giveaway Allstate cars were ordered with 3 speed trans and no power steering!

It is also quite unusual for that late a car, not to have been ordered with the "NEW" tilt wheel.

Poor Avanti .. probably never been able to do a smoky burnout. My old
steering wheel from my 63 Avanti looked like that. Mint condition. I
gave it to my dad for his 69 Avanti. After that I found out how much
they are going for used.[B)]

I made it clear to not EVER expect another Christmas gift from me.;)

Whilst you are on the subject of 64 Avanti's,
My old car 5466B was Avanti Maroon, with black interior and R1 with everything. A real late car. The B suffix indicates a dealership in LA that sold the car. I have seen 3 others withing 10 serial numbers of this car with the same suffix.

The odd thing was it had a black steering wheel. Have any of you seen a late 64 with Black interior and black steering wheel.

I still have a NOS black steering wheel that came from Bob Doeler.

The car on ebay is a real nice machine. Is it the one that has been kicking around in TW for a few years??

Thanks guys
