As some of you know, I am "detailing" the engine in the '63. I was finishing up the carb and realized that sharp eyes would notice something "different" about my setup.

First, some hints. You don't have to know any details about Carter/Edelbrock, but in the pics below, any one with auto experience could tell something was not as it appeared at first glance.

Can you spot the error in my "camoflauge" job?

Easy one, Jim - AFBs didn't come coated that color. They were a bare aluminum finish.

Well, the choke is so well camouflaged it's invisible.

With the air filter in place the choke is perfectly visible. Its the block and heads that are invisible.

The picture is not real sharp on my monitor, but it looks like torx head screws on the cover?? Did they have those in the 60's?

Wrong color, Edelbrock bottom...

Don't forget the hole in the back for the unused top screw. I hope you changed over the venturis.

One other thing, if you want to get rid of the large vaccuum port at the front of the carb it will twist out easily with pliers. I tapped mine for a 1/8 pipe fitting because it would be less obvious than a black rubber cap sticking out from the carb.

Did it all go together easily for you Jim?

Two PCV ports as well as two vacuum ports, (lower one, manifold vacuum, and the upper one is "ported vacuum" for timing advance) Also, it's hard to see if you have the seal retainer washers under the idle mixture screws springs. I think the oem washers are some what larger than the diameter of the spring.:)

Per this hint,
1. the kickdown arm is bent out.
2. no choke butterfly, linkage.
3. I don't believe Edelbrocks carburetors have a "front" fuel inlet.
4. Doesn't appear to be any washers under the body fasteners.

Okay!! I got it!! that hose isn't supposed to go to the bottom vacuum port but rather to the inlet air for the choke tube! Tell me what I've won!!....

Well, the answer I was going for was the use of Torx fasteners. Stude was so far ahead of the times they somehow put this together with screws that weren't even invented yet.

So that makes Jeff the first with the answer I was looking for. Notice I didn't say correct answer. There were several correct answers. Your Junior Stude Technoid pocket protector is being sent out by email.

I'll put up a pic of the factory, unmolested carb later, but it is indeed the yellow finish.

As most of you know this is a Carter top with an Edelbrock bottom. The hose going from the top of the carb (and used to run to the chhoke) to the bottom "vacuum port" is a pressure line to give boost reference to the throttle shafts. The pressure is ported to the shafts via channels cut into the carb base.

The throttle shafts are also O-ring sealed. The idle mixture screw have a counterbore that holds an o-ring and is topped by a washer.

I am waiting on another Torx screw to pop up that will close up the unused hole in the AFB top. That way, it matches.

I did a several more mods to improve the signalling in the venturi's and improve fuel flow.

The choke plate and shaft have gone AWOL. The shaft bores have been threaded and currently are plugged, but they seem the right size to accept fittings for a "nozzle" of some sort or another. Hmmm, wonder what that might be?
