  • Studebaker Scale Models

This Thanksgiving, I want to make a tribute to my good friend, Sam Miller, who passed away about 4 years ago. Many of you knew Sam. He was a kind and gentle guy who had a passion for cars and mainly Studebakers. He grew up with Studebakers and actually sold Studebakers at Coggins Motor Company in Charlottesville, VA. He had a home based business of reproducing scale models of Studebakers and other makes. He also made many of his own models such as GT Hawks. When he died, he left his entire Studebaker model collection to me and his house and his lifetime collection of models to another friend, Chuck. Chuck is living in the house now and has added his own collection to make the home a timeline of car models, movie and political memorbilia. It is a fascinating place. I am going to post some pictures of "The Studebaker Room" and some of Sam's creations. If anyone has their own models that they would like to post, please do. If there truly is a Heaven, then Sam will be looking down and would love to see them

Cool stuff. Looks like you have your own Stude museum! I love the '55 sedan dash for a shelf. Is that one of the terra-cotta Studebaker signs from the Proving Grounds?

I think that is a reproduction. The 55 Dash does make a neat display

My camera doesn't do well taking closeups, but I took a 1:18 '53 Starliner and 'Frickatized' it. It has a 331 Caddy V8 with the two 6 Volt batteries in the trunk and a 50's style floor shifter. It really turned out nice, like it was made that way.

I'll see about borrowing Dad's camera.

OK, here's my '53 convertable with interior from a Golden Hawk. I painted the inserts. It also has the supercharged GH engine.

And here's one I know Mr. Jeff Rice will love. It's still in the making. Almost done though. It has red Avanti bucket seats and a painted up dash, but it's not installed yet. The bed covers are made of colored cloth. It has a dual carb setup and dual exhaust that exits in front of the rear wheels.

Now, if I could only make this much progress on my 1:1 scale Studes...

                            Matthew,
Great models! Please don't ever lose or destroy them (I speak from stupid experience - why did I have to go and set those WWII fighters on fire and blast them with a BB gun?)

Man, that's a nice museum of models, Leonard. So Sam really made his own molds and did resin casts of some of those? Very nice.
